Default The best picture quality on a fantasy film blu-ray

Ok Sci-fi/fantasy fans now for the fantasy genre, some titles were shot on HD like The Avengers or Avatar for almost anything recent is shot for that and those are 2 obvious choices, what about the less obvious picks? here are the best transfers onto BD which serve as reasons to own a BD player including a PS3, to see E.T. in high definition is breathtaking and all that for fans of fantasy.

1. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

2. The Wizard of Oz

3. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Extended Cuts

4. The Harry Potter Collection.

5. The Dark Crystal.

6. Hellboy 2.

7. Castle in The Sky/Nausicaa/Ponyo.

8. Brazil Criterion Collection.

9. Secret of Arriety.

10. Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.

11. The Nightmare Before Christmas.

12. Pan's Labyrinth.

13. Alice in Wonderland 60th Anniversary Edition.

14. Peter Pan Diamond Edition.

15. Willow.

16. Labyrinth.

17. The Princess Bride.

18. Heavy Metal.

19. Watchmen Ultimate Cut.

20. Big Trouble in Little China.

21. Coraline.

22. King Kong (1933).

23. Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

24. Phantasm II. (part horror part sci-fi part fantasy as the franchise is that)

Name some others of the genre that offers quality picture.

You must add Blade Runner 30th anniversary edition and the Matrix.

I was thinking this when I looked at the list. I would say right out of the gate that E.T. is not fantasy. I'm sure our lovely members can add plenty of Fantasy titles to the list, though.

If you are talking sci fi/fantasy I'd add Zathura to the mix.

I thought The Fountain looked pretty spectacular when I watched it.

Science fiction involves a subject that could possibly happen in the future or with advances in technology but cannot happen now.

Fantasy involves a subject that could never happen under any circumstances.

E.T. and Star Trek is science fiction as it is possible, though extremely improbable. Star Wars is fantasy.

E.T. has elements of sci-fi and fantasy to it as it's categorized on Wiki and IMDB with both genres. Star Wars combines both elements as well. There are such things as hybrid films.

Who thinks The Wizard of Oz looks excellent on high def for a 73 year old film? nice to see Warner treat their classics with respect. You've never seen the Yellow Brick Road look brighter including the Witch's skin more greener.

Phantasm II with the whole franchise are mixes of sci-fi, fantasy and horror put together. Scream did a superb job of improving over the grainy bareboned Universal DVD alltogether.

Willow has one of the best picture qualities for a 25 year old film thanks to Lucasfilm as they did an excellent restoration on that film. People can own both the DVD (just for the extras not on the blu-ray) and the blu-ray for the solid picture quality and new extras galore.

The Dark crystal on HD is one of the best looking picture qualities for a 31 year old film thanks to Jim Henson Company restoration as detail is the name of the game with stuff you never seen or heard before especially the Garthaim with the crystal itself looking more colorful and sharper than ever, should please videophiles and audiophiles.

Given the age of the film, I think that Twilight Time's release of MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (1961) is very good indeed.

The Hobbit

The Goblin King / cave scene is amazing!

The LoTR extended edition set has questionable picture quality. Picture is a bit too soft IMO. I won't even get into the color controversy.
