I don't want to wait but I may be "forced" to, I really don't want to pay nearly $30 for each one. If the price doesn't come down on release day I might just wait for the next Ghibli sale on Amazon.

I'm thinking there should be at least one guaranteed Ghibli sale before Poppy Hill since this past week they had one just before these next two comes out.

But I hope I don't have to wait and one of these stores will come through with a good price.

Can nobody give me an answer as to which of these releases looks better? I'm not taking the JP releases into consideration because there's no way I can afford them.

I'm looking or a direct answer here. I've looked in other ghibli threads and couldn't find my answer. I know the specs for the releases of Whisper of the Heart. What I want is people's personal opinions on how he US and UK compares. If there's a noticeable difference between them. US has a low bit rate and the UK has been DNR'd. Neither have been given particularly respectful transfers but which one looks better in YOUR opinions.
I don't have heaps of spare time. I can't sit around all day looking for a previously mentioned opinion elsewhere. Jesus. Who'd of thought a straight answer would be so hard to come by.

If the specs for My Neighbor Totoro are correct, the US edition should have better image quality at 34.96 mbps/approx. 35799 kbps.

Bollix it isn't.

4 stars? Kenneth Brown should be sacked for this latest outrage!

The US, hands downs. It's a very good transfer regardless of it's bitrate. Nearly identical to the Japanese BD. The UKs DNRing literally removes detail from the image.

The review for the movie itself was pretty shoddy ("answers about the monsters never come" Really?), and I tend to think most of the reviews on this site (for the films themselves) are fairly well-written.

Four stars, give me a break. This was not Martin liebmen or whoever, who does not qualify to review anything. But this is Miyazaki's best movie, imo.

The screenshots look great.

The new review leaves out the most important thing... did Disney skip the literal subs like they did for Laputa? It also has a big edit to make in the last section as it repeats itself.
"Miyazaki, better than any animation..." -That whole arguable section is used twice (or continually =)).

Someone when they get this, please watch a bit of it in English. While watching, see if both the English subtitle tracks are spelling the English words. If so, the proper subs are missing again. I hope not.

I compared the subtitle examples on the DVDBeaver screenshots with the English dub and they don't match.

Here.
Sweet thx. It's probably safe to assume the same for Howl's, but I want to be sure about that one too.

The screenshots don't show for some reason, but yes, both howl and Totoro have subtitles.

I thought his article was well spoken, and he talks about his love for the film. He just said that the story is slighter than the rest of the Ghibli oevre. Which it is. And I love it for that very reason. I would put it higher than 4 stars, but I don't think it's an outrage.

Someone mentioned the Siskel & Ebert review, and Siskel actually disliked the movie for its leisurely pace: "We spent the first HALF HOUR worrying about sentient dust bunnies??"
(Ebert: "You're always complaining there aren't enough good children's films out there--This's the perfect movie to take your two daughters to, and if you don't, I will!"
Siskel: "Should be good: Two little Siskels arguing with an Ebert, that I'd like to see.")

It is slighter when you're not a Howl's fan and have seen ALL the movies , in which case Kiki's Delivery Service is still the 100% perfectly balanced Aladdin of Studio Ghibli.
Totoro was good, but we can be thankful that Hayao didn't make the story AS leisurely as he originally wanted to.

That quote is awesome. I love Totoro and I can't wait to pick this up on my next Disney Movie Club enrollment. I've seen all of the Ghibli films except for The Cat Returns, Pom Poko, My Neighbors the Yamadas, and Only Yesterday. I'm not going to count Earthsea Kiki's Delivery Service is classic an absolutely one of my favorites. Which in this case is similar to trying to pick a Pixar favorite. Depends on my mood.
