Default 160 GB Hard Drive

I've found a spot online selling the Western Digital Scorpio 160 GB hard drive for $120 Canadian. The drive is SATA-150, 5400 RPM, 8MB cache.

This is a great drive for the PS3, right? I should jump on this now, right?

From what I've seen I can't find the drive online for $120US.

I was actually looking for a seagate drive when I stumbled across this one. The SKU is WD1600BEVS

FYI: This site has had some of the best prices in canada for many years now. Used them a lot when I enjoyed hacking around with systems.

Doesn't a faster drive cause heat problems?

120 for a 160Gb drive, Canadian or US is highway robbery!

I built a new machine about 4 weeks ago, and picked up 5 SATA 250Mb 7200rpm drive for the array for 69 each... I picked up a sixth matching drive last week to use as a hot spare in the array for 59!

As for heat, that all depends... if they up the size without adding platters, not so much.

These are 2.5" SATA drives and not the familiar 35." SATA drives. They cost more.

Those must have been 3.5" not 2.5". Laptop size drives are more for less.

If you buy using pricewatch.com, you can pick up 120GB 2.5" SATA drive for $77 shipped.

I would go with a 160GB from NewEgg; you can get them quite cheap; installation is a breeze!

There was an article (which I can't remember the link too) where they compared a 5400rpm drive and a 7500rpm drive. They said there was minimal difference in access times between 5400 and 7500 and a 4mb cache vs an 8MB but that the 7500 rpm HD "may" increase heat due to is spinning faster. We won't know if there are any damaging effects until people have had 7500rpm drives in their PS3's for a while.

I remember that article too where they tested a bunch of different HDD for the PS3. I remember them stating that the cache size played a much bigger factor in loading times than RPM did. That's why I went with a 100GB Toshiba drive with 16mb cache.

The PS3 uses 3.5" drives correct? Also, is it using SATA or PATA connections? I was under the assumption that the PS3 uses 3.5" PATA drives.

It uses a 2.5 inch SATA drive. Laptop size to save space.
