Default HDMI or Component connection from HD cable box, is there a difference?

Hello all,

I am new to this forum and took the HD jump and bought a Sony KDL-52XBR4 and it was delivered this Thursday and Charter cable came out yesterday (Friday) to install HD. I had not purchased any HDMI cables due to I don't have a blue-ray yet (will shortly) and I wanted to make sure the HD cable box which was being brought out had an HDMI connection. Well, after looking at the box when the Charter guy brought it in it does not have an HDMI connection at all. He connected my HD via component connections.

Is my HD going to suffer due to not being hooked up via HDMI? I watched John Adams last night on HBO and it looked really great, but is their loss through having a component connection? If so, should I switch to Direct TV Dish and do they offer HDMI connections though their receivers?

Thanks for any answers in advance.

Lewis,

Some see a difference between the two, some prefer Component (citing "warmer" colors). In the end, I don't think the video quality changes enough on modern tvs (projectors are a different story). At this time, Satellite can't send HD audio but can do some 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS, which is a good start. You shouldn't have to worry about video signal loss. I've hooked mine up both ways, and although there was a slight difference, it didn't matter to me as I tweak my display settings which would make up for the difference in the end.

I use HDMI because it can carry audio and video in one cable. If my cable box didn't have an HDMI out, I'd have no problem using component for the video and optical for the audio.
