Default HDMI vs Component Cable

I have my HD cable programming via Component Cable. When I first got the HD programming that was my only option. I have a new cable box that does have HDMI output. Is it worth changing from Component to HDMI? I know that cable only broadcasts in 1080i. Besides being able to carry HD audio signals, is there any other difference between HDMI and Component? Does Component only carry 1080i? Thanx very much for any input.

honestly there is not much difference...or should I say, no real gain with one over the other as far as cable is concerned.

If you have a digital HDTV such as a plasma or LCD, then you should use HDMI (keep it all digital), if you have a Rear Projection CRT then component or HDMI is ok...

Should I use HDMI or Component Cables? Answer here...

real good reading.

and if youre into learning....

HDMI v1.3.. Should I wait for a v1.3 TV?!?

Yes component only carries 1080i. If you have an open HDMI port, use it. My cable box only puts out 1080i, but using the component cable and then the HDMI, the difference showed.

Games were crisped. HDMI is digital. Component is analog.
HDMI is a pure transfer, while Component signals are split up and put back together.

There will be no difference between the two for the cable box. I install the cable boxes for a living.

Your only benefit will be a single cable connection adding up to a cleaner install.

However, if you're using a home theater system then either run digital coax or optical, or HDMI..... then you'll have dolby digital audio..... your L/R (White/RED) will only give you Dolby Pro Logic.

Yeah most people don't realize this. The cables can carry it, but finding equipment that can successfully utilize 1080P thru components is like finding a needle in a hay stack most times.

It just depends if your TV will accept 1080p over component.

With analogue component, there there is a D/A and A/D conversion resulting in a loss of black level detail over HDMI, so you are going to have more trouble with dark movies. Also is 1080p to 1080i to 1080p on top of the D/A to A/D if your component video is only 1080i and you set is 1080p.

It can carry the signal, but it will not display with full resolution on most monitors. Some of the newer monitors can display 1080P full through component, but the majority of older 1080P monitors will not.

weather your TV supports 1080p over Component is a different question.
