Default Your favorite Tom Petty song and why

Seems poor Tom Petty doesn't get much recognition here even if I know many really like him.

My favorite has to be Running Down a Dream, reason being that with my old band this was one of the few that were reserved as encores and I'd let go on the solo for as long as needed, great memories

Runnin' Down A Dream - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - YouTube
Huge Tom Petty fan here. Hard to choose a favorite. I supose if I had to choose one though it would be American Girl or Even the Losers or Zombie Zoo, or.... Sorry I can't seem to lock just one down.

I also have to say that Echo is his most underrated albulm.

My favorite is probably Free Fallin' although I can relate better to Mary Jane's Last Dance (over ten years now).

You Got Lucky would be my choice.

First, it's just a really great song. Second, I remember loving the pretty straight forward message to a woman that if she thought she could do better than to just go. I was just starting to "date" girls and I already could relate to this.

Finally, the video came out during the early years of MTV and it was bizarre and interesting for the time and it was very addictive. I still love that cheesy video today.

About an eon ago, I was watching Saturday Night Live and saw Tom perform Running Down A Dream and it blew me away. I said "I'm getting THAT album!"
That album and the one that followed were perfection, imo.
I'm not all that familiar with the older albums but have heard all of the singles.
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers have waaayyy too many great songs for me to pick just one as a fav, but some standouts for me are American Girl, Runnin' Down a Dream, Listen To Her Heart, Don't Come Around Here No More and You Got Lucky.

They're awesome and I should play some of their tunes and get back into them.

It's great to see all the songs mentionned and realize how many great songs and albums are out there. I mean how do you chose a set list with so much awesome material.

Running Down a Dream had the same impact, loved it immediately. What I love the most about TP & the Heartbreakers is how basic his songs are and still transport so much freagin' energy and beauty. Pure Rock & Roll, guitar driven, and while highly debatable, I love his voice, I guess in the same way I like Dylan, there's so much honesty in their voices.

I'm honestly not overly familiar with Tom Petty's work, although everything I've ever heard from him and The Heartbreakers and The Traveling Wilbury's I've enjoyed. As such I don't really have a favourite tune. He's like John Cougar Mellencamp in that regard. Love the stuff I hear, but never got deep into them.

I like some stuff from him but it's his voice that throw me off like Bob Dylan it's another example .

I like Petty's voice but not Dylan's. I was just a casual fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers until I picked up the Damn the Torpedoes and Live Anthology BD-A discs. They honestly were the first of his albums I purchased on any format. I'm now a full fledged fan, both of those discs are awesome.

I am a huge Tom Petty fan. And it is hard for me to narrow it down to one song. I love so many of his songs. There are the obvious choices like American Girl, Refugee, Dont Come Around Here No More and Freefallin. But I also like some of the lesser known songs. Like:

It's Good To Be King
Walls
Room At The Top
The Last Dj
Like a Diamond.

I could go on listing songs forever.

Love Tom Petty... The most recent release, Mojo, is a superb album... Great on a long drive in the car.

My favourite track has to be Waiting For Tonight, from the Playback box set. As great a song as you can get, a riff that embeds itself in your mind, great lyrics, and it instantly lifts your mood, no matter what. Also, I always find it an interesting gauge of an artists quality when a great song like this is an outtake...

Mojo is indeed a great album and another awesome Tom Petty quality work, longevity without really hitting a dry period. many, if not most after so many years in the business lose their edge, their special gift lost in the ride, not Tom Petty. I have many bands I truly love, but in those, most have had a "bad" album or albums. Not him

Amen... Two musicians who have had recent work as good, if not arguably better, than the work which made them famous decades ago, in my opinion are Petty and John Mellencamp. His last couple of studio albums are also really really good...

I am also a huge Springsteen fan, have pretty much everything he has released, but even I have to admit there have been some serious 'lowlights' in his career...

Favorite song is a tie between "The Waiting" and "A One Story Town."

The Waiting because that was the 1st song I ever heard from him when I was 5 years old on MTV in 1981...yes, at one time, this channel actually played music videos!

A One Story Town because Tom opened with this song at my very 1st concert ever. I was 7 years old! I saw Tom Petty and Nick Lowe on 3/31/83 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale Long Island NY. I will never forget this for as long as I live! My dad took me...TP was and still is a HUGE favorite with all of my Aunt's and Uncle's on my Mom's side of the family! They were all in their teens, 20s and early 30s when he blew up in the late 70s/early 80s so I was exposed to all of his music back then! Great times, indeed!

Love petty. I honestly cannot pick one song. Too many great ones. I have no problem buying anything he puts out. I know it will be quality work

Like others have said, he has soooo many great songs, it's hard. But the one I really gravitate to is Even the Losers.

So fun to belt it out in the car...."It couldn't have been that easy to forget about me!" Just a great, simple song that I adore.

Other gems: The Waiting, Walls, Insider, Southern Accents, Love is a Long Road, the entirety of Wildflowers, Free Girl Now

That's my favorite record to spin.

Walls or anything from the very underrated Into The Wide Great Wide Open album!

I saw him in concert in maybe 2006, and it was currently the last concert I've been too.

He has too many GREAT songs to just pick one imo.
