It's a fairly bright and breezy adventure romp and then suddenly, the main character gets her boobs out, for no apparent reason.

Gotta love the French, lol
...so how you extract being surprised at women bathing in the nude, from finding it amusing that a topless scene just pops up, in what is for all intents and purposes, a fairly run of the mill children's movie, I have no idea. But thanks for the attention.

Good summary, sums up my thoughts in reference to this film as well.

Good month for foreign films finally being released in the U.S. - Adele Blanc-Sec, North Face and Solomon Kane (imported two of these already).

Yes, imported this one awhile back - great film that failed to get a box office release here. Plan on picking up this version as my multi-region player is acting up.

Edgy moi ?

Thing is the French have a totally different, dare I say more mature, perspective on such things.

It wouldn't have been PG, if PG13 was around in 1981. In fact, outcry from that film probably had as much to do with PG13 being implemented in 84, as Gremlins and Temple of Doom. On the whole, American Society is nowhere near as "uptight," as you put it, about violence, nudity, and language today as they were even in the 80's or even in the 90's.

Surprised Shout Factory is even releasing separate releases for this film, so close together: I suspect most who know about the impending DC will wait, and those who don't will be rather pissed. Glad it's coming, but they should combine both in the same release, if both are actually unique enough to be warranted.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the regular version being released and the Director's Cut? Is it just the brief nudity scene? I already have the Canadian blu-ray. Thanks!

I'd like to know this too. If the only change is something as trivial and shallow as that, I'd rather have the standard cut: it's MUCH cheaper so far, comes out sooner, and the kids can enjoy it too.

Not sure I'd allow kids to watch it since the regular release still has nudity in it.

In a PG film? Honestly, I don't even notice brief language, sexuality and such, watching by myself. I'd seen Band of Brothers from start to finish, 3 times and couldn't even recall there being any language in it, until someone here said that's why they preferred The Pacific. But when I have my nieces and nephews over, they can say "dang" in the movie and I'll notice. These kids are from a generated that thinks "stupid" is a bad word.

I wish there was an easy way to find out the difference between the theatrical and the director's cut. This isn't a high profile film, so I'm not surprised to see it go unanswered here so far, but I want to blind buy this and need to know if it's even worth worrying about the director's cut release.

If it helps, what little info I could find searching the web, an interview with Besson indicated he intended this as a family film. So, I would assume the DC will not deviate from that ambition, making it's unrated status purely a result of the MPAA not looking at it.

It's disappointing that Shout Factory isn't being very forthcoming about it. For the time being, they've lost a release week blind buy from me, which means if I end up getting the theatrical cut, I'll probably buy it used. And if the DC isn't as competitively priced because the theatrical release sells, I'll end up delaying my purchase of it too, maybe even going the used route there as well.

It was a lousy thing for them to do, producing separate releases, when the DC is clearly already finished. I expected more consideration of the consumer from a boutique studio like Shout.

really liked this film a lot. Interested in the Directors cut. It is a film I would have no problems at all showing to a child of any age over 5 even if nudity is involved.

In this day and age, they really should be putting multiple cuts on one Blu-Ray or Blu-Ray package (example: Blade Runner).

Picked this up new for $12 on Ebay, but didn't know there was already a director's cut coming out. Both versions list a running time of 107 minutes so can't tell the difference at this point? Would love to find out before opening this...

Exactly. It's almost inexcusable they didn't do it that way. I'm a little surprised to see Shout pulling the same kind of marketing stunt the majors get away with. Though, I'm equally surprised they didn't wait at least 6-12 months to release the DC, to avoid losing sells for either release.

Looking at the MPAA rating it's down as a PG. It mentions:

Quote:
Rated PG for some violence, language, brief sensuality and rude humor.
I wonder has the nudity been removed? The UK release has the nudity as far as I know and is rated 12 by the BBFC:

Quote:
Contains brief moderate nudity.
Is it possible the only difference is Adele Blanc-Sec in the bath? I can't see the MPAA not mentioning bare-breasts in their reasons.
