Default PS3 Freezing problem

So I've spent this rainy sunday watching 2 of the LOTR movies on my PS3. Twice now (once during the first movie and once during the second) the movie suddenly stops playing the sound then it freezes like 10 seconds later. The first time this happened it started playing normally again after about 15-20 seconds but the second time it happened i had to fast forward because it was taking too long. I was thinking it was because the dvd was scratched was had a fingerprint but I looked on both discs and they were in perfect condition. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem because I'm starting to think that it's my PS3.

probably a problem with the disc. Sometimes, there doesnt need to be scratches and fingerprints for the disc to have freezing issues.
Sometimes the disc will be broken forever- or sometimes it will work after a good disc cleaning.

Its incredibly recommended that you dont use windex (or any other glass cleaning thing), but i do it all the time and it works like a charm.

Id attempt to clean it the same way you normally clean discs, then see if it'll work.

.......it is also possible that the laser in your ps3 is dusty. That shouldnt happen this soon though.

By the way, Blu-ray movies have a scratch protection layer on them. This wont be a problem anymore. Not shure if you knew that or not.

Well I don't think theres anything wrong with the disc because it happened to two completely different movies and i've watched them before without this happening. I don't think its the laser because I got my PS3 about 2 weeks ago.

Could you reproduce this problem on each disk. i.e. it happens at the same place. If so, it is most likely a disk problem. If the problem is random, it could be ps3 problem or disk problem.

A lot of PS3 owners here in Singapore are also experiencing problems
with the player. Its more like freezing during playback. The main problem
is the optical laser which reads the disc be it BD or games. Some owners
even have their PS3 died on them only after 3 months. So its not about
bad discs. Basically discs are hardly faulty.

For me I believe in stand alone player not one which is multi tasking as
a game console cum movie/music content provider. It will certainly put alot
of strain on the optical laser. I have 2 DVD players only for movies
even though they can play CDs and have a CD player only for music.

Since I am into the BD genre now it will still be the same. Although I am
no techno savy guy I do understand that even an optical laser with so
much reading to do will certainly die out one day.If they are lessen with
workload it will last a long time.Just my 2cts worth

Yes this is logically correct. However, based on my experience playstations are highly reliable. We have 5 year old PS2 and 10 year old PS1 still working without any problems in spite of the way that children abuse them. I am surprised.

From most reports the defect rate on the PS3 is extremely low, well under 2%, unlike the Xbox 360 which may be as high as 25%. What makes you think "a lot" of ps3 owners in Singapore have problems? You can't go by posts on a board, you have to have an idea of the number of machines out there and the number of machines failing.

laughing at the 25% failure rate. but at least its down from 33% *snicker*

never had such a faulty piece of electronics as the 360. ps3 is just as reliable as everything else i have

Mine only froze on me once. It was in the middle of browsing a webpage and I switched quickly to blu-ray..the entire system froze where I had to hard boot it.

Yes, this is true. When there is a problem people will make noises and talk about it. When it is working smoothly and happy it is less likely that they would talk about it. This is the human nature.

To the OP, have you performed a firmware update for the PS3? Some of the early PS3s that had the freezing issue playing movies had the problem corrected with one of the early firmware updates.

I dont see how dust could get in through the disc slot since it has the opening blocked. Unless its dust stuck on the disc or maybe smoke build up? As far as i know the bd drive case is sealed well. My 60Gig has'nt froze on me during movies and it's been multi tasking since launch day.
