Default What would you guys do?

Here is my situation, i have a 50 Samsung DLP, nice sound system, and PS3 in our family room. My wife and I cleaned out our downstairs room, basement which is a perfect rectangle, great for home theater. We have a 5 year old Mitsubishi 55" DLP 1080i. Budget of about $3500.00 . My wife has permitted me 1 of 2 options. Would you (A) buy a 52inch 1080p plasma from BJ's, and another PS3 for downstairs, or (B) just buy a PS3 for downstairs, and save the remaining for a few years when OLED become much more reasonable (which I know could be at least 3 years)

Whats the sound like in this rectangle of yours? Does that need to be upgraded?

I would probably focus on the audio then, if you still like the tv. You could get another ps3 or even a cheap older player (profile 1.0) and spend the rest on an audio system worthy of the "great home theatre" room.

Id go with the new tv. Audio is pretty overated. The picture is the most important aspect.

agree with the audio post, upgrade you amp and get a ps3....you may be able to get a hell of a deal on a TV this holiday season if there is a recession.

Yeah, I'd get the TV then focus on your audio, get a nice reciever and speakers with the remaining money. You'll be happier that way, Yoda tells me so.

I would say put it into the AUDIO. Speakers can last up to 20 years. So invest well.

No sense having a great picture if the audio sucks. The movie experience needs great audio to be complete. Try this experiment, fire up a movie then hit the mute button and watch the movie for two minutes without sound, turn on the sound and turn off the monitor and listen to the same two minutes of the film and you will see how important both are.

Audio, done right, is MUCH more important than the picture... IMO. You see the picture but you hear and feel the sound. That said the picture is important, but your 55 is a nice TV. Sort your sound, or if you imagine that budget increasing in the near future then get your switch/amp set up and stereo, then add in the other speakers as the budget improves.

That could be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. You must never have had a good demo of what a good audio system sounds like. It should be at least of equal importance to the display, if not more.

Why not move the good stuff down to the home theater room where it matters most and leave a moderate set up in the family room. This way the family room becomes a true family room where you can watch tv and still be distracted carry on conversations and such and you can use the home theater room to really enjoy the quality of your movies. As far as waiting for the oled I wouldn't. Those screens are at least 5 years away from catching up in price to todays lcd and plasma screens.
