Hey guys, this was a topic a friend and I discussed when I purchased The Thing (Carpenter). Being that my friend was a huge fan of this film, I was surprised to find out that he had not yet purchased it. His reason? - The making-of doc which was available on the DVD release was missing on the Blu-Ray. Now to be fair many of the segments in the doc do make there way to Blu in the form of the U-Play feature, but correct they do not exist as one feature length documentary.
Now here's what I don't get with people like my friend. If you already own the DVD which is loaded with the extras you want, then why not simply make a combo-pack of your own? Many studios are already doing this with catalog titles, that is releasing a Blu sans extras and including the DVD release which includes the extras. It just seems silly to me. So question is: Do you hold off buying Blu-Ray titles strictly due to lacking extras it's DVD counterpart had? If so what are your reasonings for it? Note: I am only talking extras, as both video and audio quality are valid reasons to wait it out for a better alternative. Last edited by leburn98; 07-17-2013 at 12:38 PM. |

Tell your friend that the international (UK, for example) release of The Thing that is region free has all the extras from the DVD separately, plus it the U-control thing. It doesn't have the isolated score that is featured on the very first DVD of The Thing, I think.
But as an answer to your question, the extras are definitely a nice bonus but they wouldn't prevent me from buying a movie if I like it. |

It's psychological (if that's the right word) for me. I'll always feel much better if the Blu-ray or DVD I'm buying comes loaded with extras but, no, I won't pass something up just because it's light on supplements. I think we were spoiled by extravagant DVDs during the peak release period when studios were including everything but the kitchen sink but I think many of us have moved beyond wanting everything and just being happy with top audio and video quality. We're buying the movie, not the featurettes

No, I've never been interested in extras since their introduction. I'd rather use that time to watch more movies or to do other things in life. I couldn't imagine having the time to watch over 1200 blu's as well as their extra features.

no. i buy the title for the movie, the visuals and the audio all from the movie itself. if there are extras, that's nice but if not, it's never a deal breaker and never considered when buying either.
having said that if i find that a disc release has incredible extras then that's just extra sauce on the goose! ![]() |

No, but I choose to buy the edition with more extras, even as this proves more difficult (and most times more expensive) to me.
For example, I live in Brazil, but I rarely buy brazilian editions, because most of the times they have none or very few extras. |

Supplements are merely a bonus for me. I love to watch them, but it's not a necessity since the film itself is what my money goes towards. If there is a reason for me not buying a favorite, it's because of poor video quality. That's the only deterrent that comes to mind.

yes i deprive myself,
but not latley it seems, to clarify: with so many re-issues, the blus i buy have the same features from the dvd, or the dvd never had any, such as Missing in Action parts 1 and 2. if i do have to deprive, it wouldnt be for long because another re-issue (aka double dip) is ineveitable. |

Wow, I guess I'm definitely in the minority. I have held off buying "Independence Day" only because I have the 2-disc special release that has a ton of extra features. I thought about making my own combo pack, as I have done before, but I have a feeling they'll release a "collector's edition" that has everything on it around the time Independence Day 2 comes out. I may still make my combo pack though. I saw it in the $7.99 bin at BBY.
