no. i buy the title for the movie, the visuals and the audio all from the movie itself. if there are extras, that's nice but if not, it's never a deal breaker and never considered when buying either.
having said that if i find that a disc release has incredible extras then that's just extra sauce on the goose! ![]() |

Supplements are merely a bonus for me. I love to watch them, but it's not a necessity since the film itself is what my money goes towards. If there is a reason for me not buying a favorite, it's because of poor video quality. That's the only deterrent that comes to mind.

No, but I choose to buy the edition with more extras, even as this proves more difficult (and most times more expensive) to me.
For example, I live in Brazil, but I rarely buy brazilian editions, because most of the times they have none or very few extras. |

yes i deprive myself,
but not latley it seems, to clarify: with so many re-issues, the blus i buy have the same features from the dvd, or the dvd never had any, such as Missing in Action parts 1 and 2. if i do have to deprive, it wouldnt be for long because another re-issue (aka double dip) is ineveitable. |

Out of the 585 movies I own, I've only watched the extras on 2 titles... Scott Pilgrim vs. The World & Christine.... I might watch others at some point in time, but I definitely value the movie WAY OVER the extras. If it comes with extras, great, but it won't sway my decision to buy a blu-ray.

Yes and no, I guess...
I have made many combo packs on my own (Jay & Silent Bob, RoboCop, Akira, and The Fifth Element to name a few), but there's also some DVDs I have hung on to because of the lack of extras, such as a director's cut (xXx, Pearl Harbor, Ultimate Versus) or multiple versions in a set (Dawn of the Dead Ultimate or Memento SE). Funny you guys should mention The Thing and Independence Day, because I've held on to those DVDs as well. There are also a few DVDs I haven't upgraded due to box art, which may be silly to some, but take for instance the hideous cover for Collateral. I've hung on to my 2-disc DVD mainly because of how much better it looks on the shelf. Big Trouble in Little China SE, Rounders SE, and The Mist SE are other shining examples. Yeah, a tad ridiculous, but it matters ![]() Last edited by RLM002; 07-17-2013 at 02:48 PM. |

Wow, I guess I'm definitely in the minority. I have held off buying "Independence Day" only because I have the 2-disc special release that has a ton of extra features. I thought about making my own combo pack, as I have done before, but I have a feeling they'll release a "collector's edition" that has everything on it around the time Independence Day 2 comes out. I may still make my combo pack though. I saw it in the $7.99 bin at BBY.

Right - if anything I go out of my way or will wait for the bare bones version to come out before buying. extras tend to be mostly a waste of time and you'l watch them once in your lifetime and thats it.

Yes... I don't upgrade a DVD to a Blu unless there's an additional reason besides the basic resolution upgrade... That could mean the Blu has new extras, or is an uncut version whereas the DVD was cut, or if there was something wrong with the DVD's transfer (i.e. New York Stories being 4.3 on DVD).
So if the movie actually has LESS than the DVD (in terms of fewer extras), I'm definitely not getting it. If I was super rich, I'd buy all of them on Blu just for the res upgrade and also keep the DVD for the extras. But since I have to make choices, I'll always opt to buy a Blu that has more to offer than just that 9i.e. a film I don't already own or has new compelling features). |

yes but it depends on the movie. just as an example, I held off on buying most of the Star Trek dvds when they first came out because there was a lack of extras and I had them on vhs - on an old tv, I didn't care about the extras. with the blurays, if it is something I really like, I will usually buy it even though I know there will probably be a better set down the road. but if it is something I can hold off on, I will. A great example is Doctor Who - I won't buy the Part 1/Part 2 season releases because they don't have many extras and I know it won't be long before the complete season is released.

I always like the Blu Rays to have the same extras as the DVDs although I also dont watch them supplements too often. I have too many movies to catch up on, movies that I still want to watch for the first time, etc
My plan one day is to spend time with a movie - to watch the film and then watch the extras. I like titles that do have extras. I also wouldnt say I deprive myself either - I keep the DVDs that are worth keeping due to packaging as well as content on the disc, but Ill still get the blu ray. I just bought Carrie - the DVD Blu Ray combo because the DVD had the extras ![]() Even if the PQ of the blu ray isnt that much better or equal to a DVD upconvert Im still going Blu Ray because its the latest 'technology' and it conserves shelf space better at this point. I have 9 shelves with DVDs and Blu Rays...my wife resents it , so what I still bring home the bacon ![]() |

I used to be an extras junkie during the DVD era, but with Blu-Ray for some reason I'm caring less about them. Maybe watching them once when they were on DVD was enough, maybe because a lot of it can be viewed online via YouTube, etc. or the behind-the-scenes info/trivia is related verbally on Wikipedia/IMDB. But as others have said, if you already own the DVD with the extras, then just keep it and get the Blu-Ray for the upgrade in sound and vision. Something like The Thing is $7-$9, so it's not a huge rebuy or a hit to the wallet, especially if it's a favorite movie. I've noticed sometimes that when they do port over the extras, it's not always in HD anyway (LOTR EE, for example).
Having said that, I'm still miffed about Kingdom of Heaven : Director's Cut extras being left off. ![]() |
