What I don't like about BDs is how a scratch can easily damage the disc, which is due to the data being so close to the surface. That's the reason why they put the coating. I've rented some BDs with some very minor hairline scratches and my player had problems reading that part of the disc. But with DVDs, many players still read through scratched discs because the data is much further from the surface of the disc.

I'm sure I have a few scratched discs in my collection, but luckily they are just minor blemishes caused during manufacturing/packaging and don't affect playback.
Like the OP, I am fanatical at times when it comes to keeping my collection immaculate, but scratches don't drive bother me too much (although I take care not to cause them). What sets me off is when I unwrap a brand new title and find a big greasy fingerprint on the data side of the disc. I understand that sometimes at the factory discs might not be put into the cases correctly by machines and need to be re-seated, but why are these workers A) not wearing gloves and B) touching the data side in the first place? ![]() Luckily this doesn't happen very often but I'd say around 5 to 10 titles in my collections had a fingerprint on the disc that needed to be cleaned. I bought the Superman Anthology at Best Buy during the Christmas holiday for $55, but did not open it until last month when I did a Superman marathon for the Man Of Steel. Needless to say, one of the discs was loose, and it had a significant scratch on the back. I was almost beside myself! I inspect the HELL out of a blu ray package before I buy it, and I definitely didn't hear any rattling, and the packaging was in immaculate shape. Anyways, I was freakin out cuz I know it's not really in stores, and if I buy it online, it's really pricey. So I ended up watching EVERYTHING on the disc, and luckily there were no issues. It played perfectly. But this was the ONLY time I've ever had any blu-ray problems out of my collection. Just my story

you are a typical young kid who does not get it, if you accept scratched blu-rays you are more apt to accept other things that are not right, which in the grand scheme screws things in all things up for everyone else -- the ripple effect

Does a minor scratch or surface mark affect a Blu-Ray Disc or will it still play perfectly?

For example, I bought the Tangled 3D blu-ray pack and it had these white residue marks on it. The disc froze halfway through the movie so I took it out and tried wiping the disc clean. It then played fine. I still exchanged it for another though. After that, I check my new discs for scratches and exchange them if they're marked at all. I usually don't have time to watch a disc right away and check to see it if plays through. |

I don't know if this had been mentioned yet in this thread, but the way that blu-ray discs may become damaged is by pressing the disc on something and leaving it pressed. The pressure leaves an impression (a.k.a. a "scratch") on the disc. I take it that that is why a lot of people don't seem to take much care with handling blu-ray discs; they don't get scratched under normal circumstances like standard DVDs.

It is strange because I remember reading that the data on a Blu-Ray Disc is close to the surface of the disc and because of that a scratch could affect playback. I thought that the protective coating on a Blu-Ray Disc prevents scratches yet sometimes a brand new disc will have a scratch or a surface mark. |
