What I don't like about BDs is how a scratch can easily damage the disc, which is due to the data being so close to the surface. That's the reason why they put the coating. I've rented some BDs with some very minor hairline scratches and my player had problems reading that part of the disc. But with DVDs, many players still read through scratched discs because the data is much further from the surface of the disc.
