Default Viy (2014) A Russian horror/fantasy movie

Viy (Russian: Вий) is an upcoming horror film produced by Russian Film Group and based on the Nikolai Gogol story "Viy".

Story:

Early 18th century. Cartographer Jonathan Green undertakes a scientific voyage from Western Europe to the East.
Having passed through Transylvania and crossed the Carpathian Mountains, he finds himself in a small village lost in impassible woods of Ukraine. Nothing but chance and heavy fog could bring him to this cursed place. People who live here do not resemble any other people which the traveler saw before that. The villagers, having dug a deep moat to fend themselves from the rest of the world, share a naive belief that they could save themselves from evil, failing to understand that evil has made its nest in their souls and is waiting for an opportunity to gush out upon the world.

Looks good and I hope it will get an English version blu-ray in the future
fingers crossed.

You know, in spite of the wonky CG, I will root for this movie, and give it a shot. It's obviously low budget, and they're trying to do the 'period piece as hyper-kinetic stylized action movie' which almost never works, but dammit, I love the original film, and a lot of the same great imagery is there. Let's hope it comes together.

Just watched Viy 3D in cinema. It is very entertaining mixed genre movie - adventure/horror/comedy. An original Viy story retold in new hyperactive style. Some scenes of the movie is real spooky, some scenes makes me laugh. It is evident that some scenes inspired by (or borrowed from) the movies such as Sleepy Hollow and From Dusk Till Dawn. So what? I believe that's good inspiration. I had lot of fun watching this.

Sounds a bit like they took a classic folk tale and turned it into Evil Dead 2, not, as you said, that there's anything wrong with that Given the trailer that I saw last year, it suffered from low budget CG syndrome, and for me, it would have to work really hard in all other areas to overcome that.

Maybe You've seen first teaser that suffered from poor CG? I found only one scene looks really cheap. Most of CGs is good enough for middle budget film.
What do You think of final russian trailer?

Has anyone seen the original from 1967? I have an import DVD. One of my favorite movies. They used some pretty cool camera tricks. Granted some of the monsters are a little... rough looking, but all in all a good story. I would really like to see this new version.

I really enjoy the Russian fantasy films released on DVD by Ruscico, and Viy (1967) is my favorite. It has a great creepy atmosphere, and very inventive effects for its day. I contributed some of the DVD info that this site has about it.

If it's the same trailer that was posted today, then I don't think this film can work hard enough to overcome THAT CGI. Wow, that's bad!

Funny thing is, the trailer that's up right now looks much more polished and professional than the old one. Still, I root for all non-Hollywood films to deliver, so I'll keep my eye out for more reviews, and if it's not too expensive, I might take a chance on it.

I cannot watch this trailer; it is marked as 'Private'...???

What does that mean? Why post it here if it cannot be viewed?

Am I missing something? Thanks!

Thanks,

No subtitles on russian Viy 3D bluray. And only one audio track. But maybe You know it or maybe not there are some characters in the film speaking english from time to time. Not often. in fact. And this moments has been over voiced in russian. So i conclude the russian bluray isn't english friendly.

Default Viy 2

Quote:
Russia’s highest-grossing film in 2014, Viy, will be followed by a sequel - Viy 2: Journey to China, reportedly starring world-renowned actor and kung-fu superstar Jackie Chan.

Chan is expected to join a cast led by Jason Flemyng who starred in the previous Viy movie and is most famous for his roles in Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Snatch (2000).

According to the filmmakers, the plot of the sequel is once again centered around English traveler Jonathan Green (Jason Flemyng). Ordered by Emperor Peter the Great (1672-1725) to produce maps of Russia’s Far East, Green ends up in China where he encounters numerous fantastic adventures.
