I think Disney is really testing HD DVD fans reasoning. Disney is using the very same codec most HD DVD fans are seeing and showing them what it can really do on a format that allows it to stretch it's legs. HD DVD fans have never experienced a total HD experience on a disc (movie and all extras) and they never will as long as they stay with HD DVD. HD DVD fans will be stuck with regular DVD quality extras and minimal HD movie and/or audio encodes. They just don't have the bandwidth or the space.
It seems Disney is using an even heavier hand to get the point across this time. I will definitely pick this title up. |

i like this movie and now with higher bit rate taking the BD to Beyond high definition...SURE i'm going to buy this MOVIE.
Thanks Buena Vista and SONY for using bit rate for PQ to its full potential where can keep HD-DVD just only dreaming.Hopefully Warner take this lesson now and use BD to its Full capability. |

As usual, Chad Varnadore is correct (while HD Digest is not)
Maybe I should take up reviewing. VC-1 with the meter hitting 40 Mb/s several times and 5.1 LPCM 4.6 Mb/s The opening scene looks amazing. I wish many of my Warners BDs looked like this! |

Very nice. Spiking at 40 Mbps !!! Blu-ray fans love Disney. They have been fairly consistent with their releases. Great picture and great sound. I can't wait to see what they do with POTC. It will probably hit many spikes of 40 Mbps and maybe we may get 24/48 Uncompressed PCM Audio !
HD-DVD Fan boy : "Well, at least we have better IME and can vote on online polls !" Oh Noooos ! |

And the fanboys still see any use of VC-1 as proof that Disney is going HD-DVD. Ugh! I guess VC-1=HD-DVD more than Sony=Blu-ray.

This is so awesome that BLU-RAY movies on 50GB discs are being encoded at high bit rates using MPEG-4/AVC and VC1. I hope when 100GB and 200GB discs come out that some how they would be compatible with existing players. Could you imagine a 200GB movie with MPEG-4/AVC or VC1 with a constant Video + Audio bit rate around 48Mb per second for the entire length of the movie.

According to the review they used a 2K master to make the BLU-RAY disc. Hopefully in the future a 4K master will be used for future HDTV titles. This way in 10 years if a 4K consumer format is launched there well already be 4K masters already made up to convert to home video.

It is interesting that they would use MPEG-4 for the supplements instead of VC-1. Can anyone verify this is correct? |

The HDdigest reviewer realized he made a point for Blu-ray about VC-1 when he made this statement...
