AVC has really been taking care of business lately. I'm glad Paramount finally started using it on their encodes. I wonder who is doing their encodes, last I heard, Sony was doing their encoding work for them. Now Paramount just needs to start filling those BD50s with a LPCM or DTHD soundtrack and all will be well.

So, Paramount is releasing AVC on HD DVD now?

Wow. That is a major blow to VC-1.

Well, it is only the second title to do so, but if it is the start of a trend, that would be bloody hilarious.

It sure would be interesting to know why they are going this route for HD DVD.

For BD, it's a pleasing the masses sort of thing. Nobody will complain about the use of AVC over MPEG-2, while there are those that knee-jerk complain about MPEG-2.

But, HD DVD was in VC-1 heaven. What's going on there?

I was very surprised to see it as AVC when I checked the info screen. a rarity for Paramount on HD DVD. I am wondering if they used the same production house for both the HD DVD and the BD for this title, which would explain why both are in AVC. In the past, they have used two different companies, which doesn't make economic sense to do so. Why reinvent the wheel? I am curious to see their early June releases and what they are encoded with.

David

This is a first for Paramount on HD DVD.
Check Babel and U2: Rattle and Hum.

Both Paramount, both AVC.

BTW the BD versions of the titles I listed are MPEG2.

What I meant to say (I think)...was this was the first time I had seen both the HD DVD and the BD to have the same encoding, but I didn't review Rattle and Hum on BD. Babel was AVC on HD DVD and MPEG-2 on Babel.
