Hey all. My knowledge of hi-def is still a bit raw. I know that the new firmware update is available today for the DTS MA-HD audio upgrade on the PS3. Can someone please give a brief synopsis on how big of a difference this will actually make? I don't have a spectacular sound system to probably utilize this feature to its max potential, but I have a decent sound system and I notice a difference in sound quality when I switch the audio feature in blu-ray movies to the better quality option <---sorry I forgot what it was called. Will this firmware update make an even bigger difference in the quality now? Thanks in advance...

If your surround system can handle full 5.1 PCM audio (via HDMI of course) then you will notice a massive difference. Think of it this way... a DVD outputs video at about 8Mbps on average. Blu-ray outputs video at about 40Mbps on average. That's 5x more video detail on Blu-ray. You've seen the difference in video quality right? Now, let's look at the audio. On Blu-ray the core DTS track outputs at a steady 1.5Mbps rate. The DTS HD MA tracks output at an average of 5Mbps (sometimes up to 8Mbps). That's approximately 4x more detail being output through the sound. You have seen the difference in video, it's a very similar difference in audio. You need a receiver capable of HDMI audio, and a HDMI connection to get the best. |
