Default DTS-HD / DTS-MA Question

Here's an audio codec question, I searched here but did not see an answer. I've been browsing http://www.blu-raystats.com/stats.php , looking at different BDs and what they used for audio & video codecs. I was surprised at all the iterations of new DTS codes, I didn't realize there were so many. You can "sort by" the audio codecs and see all the different possibilities - the following are listed for DTS-HD / DTS-MA:

DTS-HD (like Saw 2 & The Devil's Rejects)
DTS-HD 6.1 (like Saw 3 & First Blood)
DTS-HD 7.1 (like The Condemned & House of 1000 Corpses)
DTS-MA (like The Day After Tomorrow and all Die Hards)
DTS-MA 24 bit (like Kingdom of Heaven & The Simpsons)
DTS-MA 24 bit 6.1 (only X-Men The Last Stand)
DTS-MA 24 bit 7.1 (only Hairspray)
DTS-MA 24 bit 96 kHz (only Chronos)
DTS-MA 7.1 (like Saw 4 & Shoot Em Up)
DTS-MA True HD (only Close Encounters)

My question is, supposing the PS3 does get that DTS-MA update someday, will all the above be decoded to PCM and sent to my receover (over HDMI of course)? And are these all lossless? Finally, that last one is different from Dolby TrueHD, right? That's a bit confusing how close the names are, never heard of that one...

Any other informative comments for a know-nothing like myself regarding these codes is welcomed!

I'm not sure if the DTS would be classed as lossless, its called 'master audio' because thats how it was originally recorded when the film was made, can't wait to here it through my PS3!!!! - when the update arrives

DTS HD MA is lossless.

On Close Encounters, you have your choice of Dolby True HD or DTS HD MA,
both codecs are provided.

Boy, am I glad someone else feels free to admit this is a bit confusing. Thanks for starting this thread... I am hoping that some of this board's truly amazing audio experts can provide some insight. And I, too, am hoping that Sony will grace the PS3 with another update some day. I'm worried that this might be a little bit more than just a software change... could it require hardware that doesn't exist on the PS3 from the factory?

Ah, thanks, that explains it, a choice of two (for Close Encounter's codecs)!

I do think the names are pretty confusing, but there function is not.

Dts core=lossy 1.5mbps for 5.1 channels
Dts HD=high bitrate lossy up to 6.0mbps for more than 5.1 channels
Dts Lossless MA= lossless with bitrates up to 24.5mbps.

The PS3 can decode Dts HD and lossless with a firmware upgrade that is in the works. It cannot pass the bitstream on to the receiver, it does not have the right chipset to do so. However internal decoding is really all you need, and in the future perhaps the only way to get it off the disc when BD-J and advance authoring become the norm. If you just want lossy for 5.1, you would chose Dts core. If you want lossy 7.1, then Dts HD is the way to go. If you want bit for bit, Dts Lossless MA is the way to go. Its not as complicated as it looks.

It is given in another thread that PS3 firmware upgrade v2.30 is planned for 14th April and that includes DTS-MA support (I expect this is internal decoding.)

What is supposed to happen when there are secondary audio streams? All are sent to the receiver for decoding and mixing or only the primary?

In-player decoding is the way to get the intended mixing, that is for sure.
