Interesting, so let me get this straight. You just want to play a dvd in your ps3 and have it play DTS? I know it can be done because ive done it. Be sure you check your settings on the ps3, receiver and the dvd options to select DTS.

Is DTS 5.1 selected in your PS3's audio settings? It should be automatically, I would think, but I'd check my HDMI settings and see what is checked off first --

I have no idea why it might not be working...

Like your name 'Dutchboy' since I'm Dutch :-)

To clear things up; I'm trying to play actual Audio-DVD's (like SACD's)

Ah - that might be an issue, not sure.

Only certain models of the PS3 will play SACDs, so maybe that's got something to do with it... ?

I know the 40gb model won't do them. I forget which will, but it's possible that's why...

Maybe someone else with more knowledge can enlighten.

Maybe im unsure of what an Audio-DVD is. But if there is an option on it for dts, then select it and it should run...

SACD, DVD-Audio, DVD's w/ DTS on them and DTS CD's are all different things. Which are you trying to play actually?

The PS3 did not play DTS audio discs at all but with the latest firmware and depending on what settings you have checked in the audio section, I believe it does play the discs now.

Try this setting.

HDMI audio - bitstream
Audio output options - DTS (YES)

The only parts of the DTS DVD's it won't play are the MLP tracks.
The CD's are trickier to get working than the DVD's.

According to the Amazon.com link you provided, you have a DTS audio CD (not a DVD-Audio disc). I'm thinking you might have to set your audio setttings to Bitstream if they are not already set to that. It is up to your receiver to properly decode the DTS audio since any CD player is going to assume that the content is a standard CD. If your audio settings are set to Linear PCM, this would explain why you would get static since the receiver is (incorrectly) assuming that the audio stream has already been properly decoded.

Here's a link to a sticky thread for more info.

From BigDaddy:

"Can PS3 Play DVD-A Music?
PS3 does not support DVD-A. As a co-developer of the competing format (SACD), Sony has never supported DVD-A
."

Does this mean that with the availability of DTS-MA it can now? Not sure. I'd like to know if it does.

Yeah, i think the bit-streaming is the way to go. Down side is that I have to put it back to LPCM when I want to watch a movie. Oh well, you can't have it all.

Thanks for your input!

No it doesn't. The dts tracks on dts Entertainment's DVD's are included in the VIDEO_TS folder of the DVD, not the AUDIO_TS folder.

The dts Entertainment DVD's most often include a DVD-Audio high resolution mix, but it is in ADDITION to the dts mix that's also included.

Likewise most DVD-Audio discs contain video footage and Dolby surround mixes of the album in the VIDEO_TS folder for compatability with non-DVD-Audio players.

Any DVD-Audio disc will play in the PlayStation 3, you just can't get at the DVD-Audio portion of the disc.

Well you can have it all, just set-up your optical connection for bitstream and your HDMI for LPCM.

Whenever you listen to a dts-CD or something you want to listen to bitstreamed dts with, change your receiver to the optical input. When your done, go back to the input set-up with HDMI.

Then you never have to change the PS3's menus.

As long as you have the right number of inputs on your receiver, you're golden.

Be aware, that when you pop a movie in, you can switch between Bitstream and LPCM by hitting the Triangle button, then scrolling over to the audio input button. Then you can switch it back immediately... Might save you a second or two.
