Sorry, I have searched, and searched... but can't find the answer I am looking for.
I am looking to upgrade my receiver soon to utilize the HDMI inputs from PS3. I understand that I cannot bitstream DTS-MA, and that the internal decoder for TrueHD and DTS-MA don't matter at this point. I am ok with that. I want the capabilities to have it down the road. Here is my question. I have an enclosed entertainment center with a solid backing and glass front doors (pictures coming one day). I have a Denon 3805 now, and haven't had an issue. I am worried that if I get the Onkyo, the air flow will be next to non-existant and could cause issues. I have heard many a horror story about these overheating, sparking, and smoking ![]() Would I be in danger of overheating and frying an Onkyo in this cabinet? I really love all of the features of this receiver, but am worried about this issue. ![]() Does anyone have this receiver in an enclosed cabinet? Less than 1-2" of breating space? My Denon seems to hold up fine, and would assume the 3808ci would hold up well as well, but for about $1000 less, I would prefer the Onkyo if I could be assured I won't fry it. Thanks in advance Mark Last edited by Krafticus; 04-16-2008 at 02:22 PM. |

Have you considered putting a PC fan on the back of the cabinet?
Quick easy fix, and could solve some of you heating issues. Ideally I don't think I would want any reciever with such low clearance and no cooling. |

You really need more clearance for any reciever, but as an 805 owner myself, I would advise you not to do it. The manual that comes with it suggests at least 5 inches above the unit and not in an enclosed area.
My unit is in an entertainment center, but the back has a 1" hole and the front is completely open. I also have about 5-6" above the unit as well and it has no trouble at all. It does get warm to the touch, but I always feel it at the end of a movie and it has not had any overheating/sparking/smoking problems. You can see a pic of it in my sig. |

I have an 805 in an enclosed cabinet (glass doors on front, opening in back for cable passage). It is on the bottom of the cabinet with about 3.5 inches of clearance above it. It gets hot to the touch after being on all day, but not so hot that you can't leave your hand laying on it. I've had zero problems thus far. I did have it on top before and it got much warmer, remember heat rises, so the bottom of the cabinet will be the coolest.

Thanks for your input. I will most likely see if I can remove the shelf above it (as it would be on the bottom) for clearance purposes. If I can find a PC fan that runs quiet, I should be good. I assume I could plug that into the A/C outlet in the receiver, so it only comes on when powered up. Thanks everyone for your input Mark |
