Default Unpopular director opinions.

I hope this isn't too similar to the "Unpopular movie opinions" thread. Anyway, let's start this off right ladies and gentlemen.

Hitchock is overrated.
De Palma's filmmaking style is annoying.
Killer Joe is William Friedkin's best film.
David Gordon Green, whether it be his "indie" films or his bigger budget fare, is the best director working today.

As much as I love Kubrick, I don't think The Shining and Full Metal Jacket are masterpieces. I'd rank the (brutally underrated) Lolita and Eyes Wide Shut above them.

I love Dune and consider it to be one of Lynch's best, even though he's pretty much disowned it due to studio interference.

Nolan's films are neither intelligent nor visually stunning.

There's nothing original about what Tarantino does, contrary to the popular opinion that he's so unique and distinctive.

Dissagree with FMJ.Nolan has done some visually stunning movies-agree on the intellectual part to some extent.Tarantinos two first movies are (or should that be were?) original. He later sank into obscurity.

@TS:Hitchcock overrated?Depends on what you expect, but a director with that resyme hardly qualifies for that term.

As for me:I think Spielberg is way overrated.Think Jaws is one of the best movies ever made, but after that he became synonimous with sentimentality and simplistic. But that is me.

i dont think anyone thinks Tarantino is original, including Tarantino himself. im pretty sure thats why he doesnt do commentaries for his films, because they would just be "i stole this from ____, i stole that from ______"
his films are collages of the films he loves, which i dont mind.

I do like Vertigo and Rear Window, but other than those two, I just don't care for him.

The following directors make boring crap:

Wes Anderson
Paul Thomas Anderson
Sofia Coppola
Terrence Malick
Stanley Kubrick
Darren Aronofsky

...there are plenty more that just arent coming to mind right now.

Neil Blomkamp has yet to make a movie that's worth seeing more than once.

Peter Weir is the greatest living director.

Michael Mann's most recent two pictures, particularly Miami Vice, are just as great as his trio of beloved nineties films (The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, The Insider). This might not be as unpopular or controversial among Internet film fans, but see how far you get with it in the quote-unquote real world. Miami Vice is so misunderstood and undervalued by the public.

Tony Scott's best film is Domino.

Steven Spielberg's best "era" is the six-film run from A.I. to Munich.

James Ivory is one of the greatest directors ever. I rarely see him given his due online, and at times "Merchant Ivory" is even wielded as a pejorative, but he is in fact a wonderful, humane storyteller and stylist who has made four or five stone cold masterpieces and plenty of other perfectly enjoyable films.

Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, Hanna, etc.) is the best director to debut within the last 20 years.

Brian De Palma is more miss than hit. Not only is most of his work a ripoff of Hitchcock's style, but the writing is pretty poor, as well. I do love Passion, though.

Also, I think Tony Scott isn't very good. His best film is hands down True Romance, but the rest of his films are pretty generic and strictly rely on colorful visuals and this and that.

Carrie is trash, granted trash that a lot of people seem to love. Mission Impossible is alright but has almost no replay value, the only movie of his I've seen that's still worth watching is Scarface.

I honestly only like Passion by him, and if I recall correctly, The Untouchables was nice, too.

I've never seen Carrie (even though I got the new Blu-ray in), so I'll be doing a double feature of that and the new one when it gets closer to the date.

Scarface is my fav. of De Palma's, though I have yet to see The Fury, and some others. I thought Carlito's Way was pretty good too for what it's supposed to be. I also quite enjoyed Mission to Mars.

I think Chris Columbus has put together a pretty solid film career, and is very under-appreciated.

Home Alone 1 and 2
Harry Potter 1 and 2
Mrs. Doubtfire
Only the Lonely
Bicentennial Man
Adventures in Babysitting

Plus he wrote the script for both The Goonies, and Gremlins

Spielberg's filmography has more mountains and valleys than a mountain range.
