For me the main two would be Lost in Translation and The Big Lebowski.
I first watched Lost in Translation when I was 15 and thought it was the most boring thing I had ever seen. I revisited it again at 21 and instantly fell in love with it, mostly because I was able to relate more to the characters and themes of the film. It is now my favorite movie. As for The Big Lebowski, I can't quite put my finger on why I didn't like it upon my initial viewing. It was just didn't "click" for me or something. The second time though, I thought it was the most hilarious thing I had ever seen. Currently it's not the most hilarious but it's still pretty great. Ponyo - I enjoyed it the first time, but I kind of disregarded it as a kid movie compared to the other Ghibli movies. I revisited it about a month ago, and it was just great. I do think it's different from a lot of the others, but I definitely appreciate it more now. The visual style is amazing.
Ran - I enjoyed it the first time I saw it, but certainly didn't appreciate the full scope of it. It's become one of my favorite Kurosawa movies, at least when it comes to his later work. Metropolis - I must have been too young when I first saw this. I remember thinking it was boring, and I'm pretty sure I fell asleep. I revisited it last year, and I was just blown away. It's obvious that it's one of the greatest achievements in cinema ever. I bought the Masters of Cinema version, as well as the Moroder remix immediately. Lang was absolutely ahead of his time in so many respects. |

Biggest one is Miami Vice.
Was indifferent to it the first time around. The second time around, I realized its brilliance, but was still cold to some aspects. Now, after many more viewings, well, you guys know. It's a masterpiece. ![]() |

The Thin Red Line - I made the mistake of comparing this with Saving Private Ryan, since they were released in the same year. I wrote it off for the longest time because I thought Saving Private Ryan was clearly the better movie. When I saw one of the Criterion sales going on, I decided to buy it and give it another chance. The movie gets better with each viewing.

![]() The Big Lebowski I've only seen once and I hated it. One of the most overrated movies I can think of. I'm sure there are some I hated and then liked but I can't think of them off the top of my head, but there are several I just liked upon first viewing and now really love. Garden State, Jennifer's Body, (500) Days of Summer, Closer, Brokeback Mountain. These have become favorites. Garden State, Closer, and Brokeback are all-time top 10 favorites. I know Jennifer's Body isn't a masterpiece but it's really fun and clever. One of the most entertaining horror movies of the past few years. It gets better every time I watch it. |
