My friend has a Plasma tv from LG and it does not mention anywhere HD ready. The booklet says the resolution is 1080i and it has a DMI input. Will he benefit in PQ if he upgrades from DVD to Blu-Ray or won't he be able to see the higher resolution of Blu-ray discs ?

Just make sure the DVI or HDMI input can decode HDCP (the copy protection for HD media) and he should be fine.

it probably doesn't say HD ready because pretty much all new plasma/LCD/DLP TV sold now are HDTV with built in tuner. Few years ago you have HD Ready (HD with no built in tuner), HDTV (with built in tuner), and EDTV. Kinda confusing, huh? Thankfully, EDTV and HD Ready only TV are things of the past.

If you have HDMI connection on the TV, then you will definitely see a big PQ improvement in blu-ray over DVD.

Not neccessarily! There were some older flatscreens sold WITH HDMI that could NOT decode HDCP. So make sure it supports it. I think this isn't an issue with newer models anymore, but it used to be.
