Personally, I loved both of them a whole lot.
Pacific Rim is a comeback (along with being a homage) to classic movie monsters of the past, like Godzilla. The film was a very fun blockbuster that I had a blast with at the theater. Cloverfield is simular to PR, but with a unique twist (the POV is only from the Humans). Although, the only problem with Cloverfield was that [Show spoiler] . The film would have been much more terrifying if they kept the film only as a visual allegory to 9/11 (which I thought this film was in the first place).

The idea that Gojira is the definitive name is debunked by the historian commentary on the Criterion edition. Both words are an attempt to translate a Japanese symbo-word into English letters. Both are an approximation of the sound a native Japanese speaker makes when pronouncing the name. Neither is particularly correct -- and Godzilla is the approved spelling that the film was marketed under back when.
L's and R's are kind of mish-mashed as a sound in the spoken Japanese. |

Don't you think I know that? But it is titled "Godzilla". Dunno about Japan...
Fun fact - The word Gojira is an amalgamation of the Japanese words for Gorilla; "gorira" and whale; "kujira". It's also the name of my daughter... who is screaming like a Kaiju right now! You got your Pacific Rim yet? Mine shipped today, and is on the long trek down under for the next couple of weeks. Last edited by AmrlKJaneway; 10-16-2013 at 08:12 AM. |

Man, I will never forget the experience I had when I saw Cloverfield in theaters. I loved it. Every damn minute of it and I think it's a fantastic monster film. Another film that doesn't get the respect it deserves.
Pacific Rim was extremely entertaining with fantastic imagery. I mean it has Idris fxcking Elbas in it for fxck's sake. It's probably my favorite action film I've seen in the last 2 years at least. I personally think Cloverfield was a better directed film but Pacific Rim is so much fun I'll probably watch my blu-ray a thousand times. |

Cloverfield made you feel like you were experiencing a monster attack and the terror of surviving it. But some people don't like the handy-cam effect and lack of monster screen time.
Pacific Rim is a fun spectacle, that relishes in the playing of giant monsters and mechs brawling and treating there surroundings like sandboxes. But is pretty flat with acting and pacing issues. Both have their own weaknesses and strengths. But I would say I like Cloverfield more. |

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Pacific Rim. It looked great and all but as I mentioned in PR's main thread, I didn't feel any sort of threat from the kaijus. The only scene that I felt actual terror was Mako's flashback. It needed more of that. Cloverfield on the other hand, actually captured that sense of danger. That feeling of "if this were to really happen, it would feel like that". That one army scene blows any action scene from PR out the water! Plus the viral marketing leading up to the films release made it that much better.

Cloverfield was more realistic. It is what a real attack by a giant monster would be like, absolute terrifying chaos. Pacific Rim was more fun though. Cloverfield had an outstanding viral marketing campaign, Pacific Rim's marketing capaign was nearly non existent. I love both films to death, both are terrific in their own ways.

I've loved giant monster movies since I was a kid and would watch the Godzilla films with my grandmother. With that said Cloverfield is quit possibly the biggest letdown ever. It was terrible in every way and IMO the monster design was crap. I could go along with the handy cam idea and I think it was executed very well but I'm sorry when I go to see a kaiju movie I'm going to see it for the monster(s) not for a bunch of humans running around being scared. I don't know if it will ever find it's way into my collection for those reasons. Being an anime fan as well Pacific Rim is like a wet dream come to life. It was spectacular in every way and gave me more then I could ever possibly want from a movie. With that said it all really doesn't matter because the king returns next year. Bring on Big G
