Canada Packaging Question

Maybe there is a post already listed about this question but I couldn't find it, so here goes... I have a question about the packaging format of some UK releases. Specifically those titles from BFI or Eureka and a few other companies that release dual format editions. I have noticed at the top of some releases the packaging displays the Blu-ray logo in the upper left corner and the DVD logo on the upper right, and in some cases it's the opposite way around. Now that I am collecting only Blu-ray format packaging I am wondering if the company lists Blu-ray in the upper left corner then the packaging is a Blu-ray format size package and if the company lists DVD in the upper left corner then the title comes in standard-sized DVD packaging. Can anyone shed some definitive light on this question for me? Thanks, and have a great day!

As the OP is Canadian, they might wish to know that UK BD packaging is thicker anyway, so it would still stand out on their shelf...

All blu-ray packaging in the UK come in a 14mm spine standard blu-ray case (some rare examples use an 11mm spine, most notably artificial eye releases). So they are thicker than the 11mm spine cases found commonly in the US.

The dual format editions use a 14mm clear (i.e. not blue) blu-ray case with a swing tray. This seems to have become a standard for dual format editions here (MoC, BFI, Arrow).

If you are worried about the thickness, then blu-ray only releases can be easily transfered from a 14mm case to an 11mm case (I do this for all standard bluray editions which do not include booklets or extra disks). The spine artwork usually looks fine as the title and BBFC logo do not reach the edge. Only one which did not look fine was 'Hidden' from AE, as the AE banner reaches the edges of the 14mm spine.

The clear dual format editions usually include booklets, and will not fit into an 11mm spine (much like Criterion releases).

Most of the Paramount releases have the BBFC logo reaching the edge of the spine, so if the OP were to buy something from Paramount's archive they may not be able to transfer the artwork to a smaller case.

I'm still trying to work out why Paramount released Iron Man 2 in some stores with 12.5mm Elite case. The 12.5 cases are a good compromise if the logo's don't look right in 11mm ones.

First off thank you to anyone who responded to my question... I appreciate your input. The thickness of the packaging isn't the issue so much as the height of the casing. I only collect Blu-rays now and I really don't want to have DVD packaging sticking up here and there inbetween the rest of my Blu-rays, mostly because I eventually want to have and will need to have shelving made for my Blu-rays. Besides... I'm an anal-retentive Virgo and I like things nice and neat and orderly....

I guess I can go ahead and include those UK titles that threw me off with their labelling the DVD on the left upper-side and the Blu-ray labelling on the upper-right hand side... it made me think that the product would be in standard DVD packaging.

Thanks everyone! Much appreciated! Have a great week!

P
