I remember hearing estimates that say that Blu-ray should take half the sales of movies by 2012. Well I am no expert, but I have to say this sounds logical to me.
Blu-ray has already achieved a strong momentum and strong sales in a declining economy. This might actually help BD as long as the manufacturers can keep player prices down, and the MSRP of movies drop soon. In 3-4 years time, I can definitely see Blu-ray being the primary choice for viewers. Sure DVD will be around for another 10 years or so, but it won't be dominate for much longer. Look at it this way, how long was it till you saw commercials advertising DVDs and not DVD and VHS (or Video and DVD)? A lot longer than it took them to get Blu-ray only commercials out. Blu-ray is actually at a faster pace than DVD was, and it is increasing despite the economy. While DVD is and was the more successful video format to date, Blu-ray has the potential to outdo that. Digital downloads have almost no market share, and are far more hype than performance. They are pushed more by companies like Apple and MS and whatnot because they can make more money than the studios off of these. But at $3 a rent, there is no way that these can achieve the turn around that Blu-ray has. Blu-ray will most likely overtake DVD in 3-4 years time, but only time will tell. |

Best Buy integrated the DVDs with the Blu-rays earlier this year and it looks like Target is doing the same now.
It's annoying for us that just buy Blus to have to sort through DVDs to find what we are looking for but for the casuals, it hopefully gets them more into the idea. |

![]() I'm still shocked that they're catering DVDs. Why can't they just do the Blu-ray combos and be done with it. |

The average person is still very happy with DVDs. Many of my friends still ask for the DVD over bluray from Netflix due to extra cost to rent bluray or they stream and are very satisfied with the picture on their flatsreens.
and now may I direct everyone to the streaming vs. bluray thread https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...219025&page=24 also I am a very big fan of the Bluray/DVD combo packaging, bonus with itunes download, because the DVD is still more universal than bluray and many people still don't own a bluray player I also love the posts from 2008 in this thread and how things have ended up. I, personally still enjoy buying Blurays. |

DVD is still king, any brick and mortar retail store will show you that. I was just at Sams Club and they have maybe 20 things on Blu, but well over 100 things on dvd, and the BD section keeps shrinking instead of growing.
![]() BB and Target are all but impossible to shop anymore with the dvds mixed in, plus Target doesn't even put their discs in any order but random! ![]() ![]() I'd like to be able to buy more in stores, but between them carrying almost nothing I want or making it impossible to find, Amazon is my best friend. ![]() |

get the standard price for blu-rays down to $15 for 6 months, then stop making dvd's and keep the price for blu-rays at $15. i think that will give an incredible push.
no, i'm not talking about tv show seasons or multi part movie's either, but standard single movie releases should have a regular price of no more than $15 and make one disc that has both 3D & 2D on it with most of the extras (if not all of them) as online streaming things available with the disc in the player; this will free up space for 3D & 2D on the same disc. ![]() |

1. Calif Sales Tax - they charge it now leveling playing field 2. no price protection Best Buy has had a lot of $5.00 Blurays, good titles too like Runaway Jury and with the Upgrade and Save program I've also bought a ton of catalog titles for $5.00 [even though I've heard it's over for good] and I reiterate, the titles were all great ones, Lawrence Of Arabia, A Few Good Men, X Men series with 10.00 movie coupons purchased for $5 per title w/U&S, Jack Reacher for $7.99, Warm Bodies for $10.00 Also prices are lower or comparable at Target, Walmart, BB many times with exclusive bonuses. Brick and Mortar is BACK! |

I love the blu/dvd [and 3D/Blu/DVD] combo pack. this is actually what is getting people to buy blurays. They compare the price and it's only a few dollars more to buy the combo. Yeah, we'd all love $15 price for new release blurays but I just don't think that is going to happen except during Black Friday. We're still in a state of flux right now I don't think it's about pushing bluray over DVDs anymore but whether physical will survive. The penetration of DVD players is still huge so the studios will still make stand-alone DVDs because they would be leaving too much money on the table to leave that market, even with the combo packs for sale some people just don't want to spend the extra $3 to $5 to buy them. The rental market DVD is still huge another reason they must keep making them and allso due to how many households have a DVD player and not a bluray player. For myself, I believe Bluray will be the last physical format in my lifetime, just like the CD. Last edited by 50strat54; 11-01-2013 at 07:41 PM. Reason: added thoughts |

Blu-ray could easily overtake the market if the studios did the following:
1) Eliminate DVD only SKUs 2) Offer a BD only option for new releases with a price of $19.99 or less instead of just a BD/DVD/DC with a price closer to $24.99 or less 3) Release more TV shows on BD that already have 2K or higher masters sitting around This would be a good start. |

I preaty much always buy a blu-ray edition of a film over the dvd unless the blu-ray is out of print (Fight Night, Night of the Living Dead 1990). Because I usually buy older films, there are still things that are dvd only that I have broken down and bought recently because if they're not out on blu-ray by now, they probably never will be.
I think the main reason that many people don't care about blu-ray is that they really can't tell a difference, they think blu-ray players do not play dvds, they think blu-ray discs are much more expensive, they have no interest in rebuying the same things again, or they just stream from Netflix. yeah I bought House of Frankenstein/Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman for 6 bucks recently because who knows if Universal is ever going to release more of their old horror films on blu-ray. Same goes for a lot of the dragon dynasty kung-fu titles. FYE has them for preaty cheap, many don't have blu-ray discs right now, and if they do the quality isn't much of a step up from the dvds.
