Well, it's never fun seeing such a missed prognostication from yourself. I didn't anticipate some people completely bypassing Blu-ray and moving on to streaming video. Blu-ray would likely have made parity with DVD sales by now if streaming didn't exist.

Well none of us can foresee the future 100%, we all make mistakes. It's not like you're Superman.

I'm still shocked that they're catering DVDs. Why can't they just do the Blu-ray combos and be done with it.

The average person is still very happy with DVDs. Many of my friends still ask for the DVD over bluray from Netflix due to extra cost to rent bluray or they stream and are very satisfied with the picture on their flatsreens.

and now may I direct everyone to the streaming vs. bluray thread

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...219025&page=24

also I am a very big fan of the Bluray/DVD combo packaging, bonus with itunes download, because the DVD is still more universal than bluray and many people still don't own a bluray player

I also love the posts from 2008 in this thread and how things have ended up.

I, personally still enjoy buying Blurays.

DVD is still king, any brick and mortar retail store will show you that. I was just at Sams Club and they have maybe 20 things on Blu, but well over 100 things on dvd, and the BD section keeps shrinking instead of growing.
BB and Target are all but impossible to shop anymore with the dvds mixed in, plus Target doesn't even put their discs in any order but random!
I'd like to be able to buy more in stores, but between them carrying almost nothing I want or making it impossible to find, Amazon is my best friend.

It might have taken 3 minutes and two salespeople but Halloween (yknow, probably one of the biggest releases of the past month) was eventually located at Target on Thursday, lol.

get the standard price for blu-rays down to $15 for 6 months, then stop making dvd's and keep the price for blu-rays at $15. i think that will give an incredible push.

no, i'm not talking about tv show seasons or multi part movie's either, but standard single movie releases should have a regular price of no more than $15 and make one disc that has both 3D & 2D on it with most of the extras (if not all of them) as online streaming things available with the disc in the player; this will free up space for 3D & 2D on the same disc.

I hate when they put 3D and 2D on the same disc due to problems booting up etc. I prefer each disc to it's own format.

I love the blu/dvd [and 3D/Blu/DVD] combo pack. this is actually what is getting people to buy blurays. They compare the price and it's only a few dollars more to buy the combo.

Yeah, we'd all love $15 price for new release blurays but I just don't think that is going to happen except during Black Friday.

We're still in a state of flux right now I don't think it's about pushing bluray over DVDs anymore but whether physical will survive. The penetration of DVD players is still huge so the studios will still make stand-alone DVDs because they would be leaving too much money on the table to leave that market, even with the combo packs for sale some people just don't want to spend the extra $3 to $5 to buy them.

The rental market DVD is still huge another reason they must keep making them and allso due to how many households have a DVD player and not a bluray player.

For myself, I believe Bluray will be the last physical format in my lifetime, just like the CD.

Blu-ray could easily overtake the market if the studios did the following:

1) Eliminate DVD only SKUs
2) Offer a BD only option for new releases with a price of $19.99 or less instead of just a BD/DVD/DC with a price closer to $24.99 or less
3) Release more TV shows on BD that already have 2K or higher masters sitting around

This would be a good start.

Not mine due to

1. Calif Sales Tax - they charge it now leveling playing field
2. no price protection

Best Buy has had a lot of $5.00 Blurays, good titles too like Runaway Jury and with the Upgrade and Save program I've also bought a ton of catalog titles for $5.00 [even though I've heard it's over for good] and I reiterate, the titles were all great ones, Lawrence Of Arabia, A Few Good Men, X Men series with 10.00 movie coupons purchased for $5 per title w/U&S, Jack Reacher for $7.99, Warm Bodies for $10.00

Also prices are lower or comparable at Target, Walmart, BB many times with exclusive bonuses.

it's not like that at my "local" sam's club. they have lots of blus and probably about as many dvds. sure they could probably do away with the dvds and just go blu, but at least they have just about any title that is on dvd also on blu (if offered from the studio).

and they're good for getting just about all the digibooks.....which i love.

I see Best Buy pushing new titles at $24.99 for new titles in Blu-Ray 2D (Pacific Rim). With consumer confidence statistics in the dumpster, I don't get it.

Blu is still priced too high. When it gets down to DVD levels, it will triumph.

What would be a DVD level price - $15 for new release? I remember DVDs went for $17.99 sometimes back in the day and only the DVD.

Most of the big releases are combo packs [BD/DVD/Digital code] sometimes with bonus discs or download. You are getting much more for your money. Here's what I paid and remember there's also price reductions after the fact and price matches.

Here are some prices during the first few weeks of release:

Star Trek Into Darkness 3D target exclusive bluray bonus disc Release week: 27.99 reduced in 2 weeks to 19.99, target refunded me the difference

Star Trek into Darkness 2D combo w/Target bonus disc was 19.99 release day

Hansel & Gretel BD/DVD/iTunes code combo Target digipak w/ book: $13 [WOW!]

Iron Man BD/DVD/iTunes code combo - Walmart 19.96
Iron Man 3D BD w/3D/BD/DVD/iTunes code - Walmart 24.96
Target and Best Buy all price matched

Oz BD/DVD/iTunes code combo - Walmart 19.96

The Heat BD/DVD/Digital code - Reduced 2nd week by BB to 17.99, price matched at Target and I still got the Target bonus download

Pacific Rim BD/DVD/UV code - Walmart 19.96, 24.96 to get the Walmart bonus disc, I passed on the bonus disc for this title

G.I Joe Extended Version Best Buy Exclusive I believe was 19.99 but was released during upgrade and save and I traded in a DVD to get the 14.99 price and I got my dogtags too last week.

In addition there's great catalog pricing. Lots of great titles at $5 w/U&S and some just priced at $5
I want all the items in the combo pack and I'm glad they just don't offer Bluray standalone. I know some people on here would like that to get a lower price, but not me.

I still enjoy having the DVD and getting the iTunes code to watch on my I touch whenever I have to wait in lines.

So my point, the prices aren't that bad and if you are patient, some of the prices will be reduced during Black Friday. I am willing to pay a bit more to have it NOW. I don't see movies in the theaters anymore, so I factor the movie ticket price into the bluray I'm buying and I don't want to wait anymore to see the film since I've waited out the theater run. I'm willing to pay opening day prices because I no longer want to wait.

Anyone else on this forum love the combo packs? I don't dig the UV code [WB and Sony] but love the iTunes code.
