Default Planet Earth blu ray disc video quality issues....

I just bought planet earth on blu ray from best buy, love it, looks amazing! But on the first disc, episode 3 (Freshwater), I noticed some strange picture issues. During one of the first scenes, the amazing helicopter waterfall fly-through shot,(at title 4 chapter 1 00:03:47) I noticed there was a kind of "off-and-on" flicker of white noise. At first I figured it was just some kind of camera issue, but it continued on for at least 4 minutes. I also noticed that it came back a couple of times throughout the episode. I haven't found any talks of such picture issues with planet earth, so i'm assuming it may just be my copy....But I figured i'd check in with you nice folks to see if it's a bigger issue. Please let me know if anyone else has experienced this problem. Thanks!

Thanks for the response. Dernit, just my luck I happen to pick up a messed up copy of planet earth....It can't be the tv, I just bought it ( a 57" Mitsubishi DLP 1080p tv to be exact!), plus I've been playing ninja gaiden sigma (PS3), and watching other blu ray discs yesterday/today I (via HDMI), and had no such picture issues with any of that. It clearly looks like it's imprinted onto the footage, that's why I thought it might be their cameras or some post production flub. Hope I can find that receipt!

got the same problem that is the only scene i have found with a issue and i would say it was only about 2 minutes for me.
i have watched 30-40 Blu-ray discs and that is a first for me. so with it being a first i think its not my set up. well take it back and get a new copy or complain to bbc america?

Did you double check the exact time I posted? I'd like to make sure that it's a "hit and miss" problem before I start going back and forth with messed up discs...

Watching the first time I didn't see that but now I can see it. Barely at the scene you mentioned but it's more pronounced later (~5:30) when the background is darker.

Well, got a replacement, it's the same...So now that we know this problem has affected a greater number of copies of Planet Earth, 2 questions remain: 1. Is this problem also visible on the HD release? and 2. Is it an issue with the master. (as in, perhaps the broadcast version has this problem as well...)

I have yet to watch any more episodes, so I can't tell yet if this image problem continues randomly, but so far this particular episode is ripe with em. Check out what Heresy pointed out at 5:30 in the same episode. You can clearly see the image problems more pronounced than in my example, and you can even see other image problems as well, like visible artifact lines. So, I guess it's time to contact BBC America right?

I didn't have this problem with my version or maybe I just haven't noticed it. But in your case, what do you have to lose from contacting BBC?

well i have watched every disc and that is the only time i have seen a problem. i remember watching that episode on tv and i do not recall that happening. so i wonder what it is the cause and if there will be a replacement offered at some time. Let me know how it goes with contacting them about this issue as if not i will do so soon myself as i feel that is one of the breath taking parts of the whole series.

It's a shame, it really is an amazing shot, and it was completely ruined for me with the distortion. I'm a big videophile, and a stickler for image quality, i'm usually a bit nitpicky about stuff like this, and it can really bother me if it's a continuous problem. Which is why it was surprising to me that my wife (who has been quoted as saying "just give me an old 10 inch black and white tv with the bunny ear antennas and i'll be happy") noticed the problem before I did, and she NEVER notices these things... It was like pulling teeth to get her to notice the semi-annoying "rainbow effect" on my DLP, which isn't so bad really. So it sucks to drop 100 bucks on a set that has serious authoring issues... I'll be contacting BBC America ASAP.

I just watched that disc two nights ago and didn't notice a problem so I put that disc back in a few minutes ago and once again had no problems with that scene...or any scene so far in the series and I'm on disc 3 currently.

I'd be interested in finding out if this issue shows up on both 1080p and 1080i. Maybe it's simply a matter of how the display is handling motion... I'm still waiting for my copy.

Hmm...the plot thickens... So this problem may only have affected a certain amount of discs. I'm curious to find out how many people here have no problems with their copy. I'm also curious to test out the 1080i/1080p theory DavePS3 mentioned... I'll try it out tonight. randomlude, were you watching your copy in 1080i, or p?

It is there at both 1080i & 1080p on PS3 and Panasonic; it's definitely something wrong with the encode not a display or player issue.

I know simcal has contacted BBC America, but i'm not sure who to contact. There's no "Home Video Inquiries" on their main site...any ideas?

Well.. considering that the posterization issue is being blamed on the source and that the H264 broadcasts were 'softened' by codec nature hiding flaws, and VC-1 was just so uberrific mimicing the source (I love how my question about the title screen having the same issue was completely avoided), I wouldn't doubt if something else got jacked up in this encode by the compressionist or VC-1, or both.

That's not to say it doens't look beautiful 95% of the time, it's the other 5% that really Irks me. I've noticed the 'flicker' in those shots as well. It's almost like the white or another color belonged there, and the pixels were merged for a split second with a darker color. I attributed it to maybe using an 480i camera for those shots, but I'm thinking otherwise now.

Maybe someone can grab a screen capture showing the issue via computer. If it can be captured, it for sure means it's not a display issue.

Wasn't Discovery Theater planning their own release of PE with Weaver as narrator? If so, i'll be picking up that one (if the encode is right) and trashing this one.

PS, I have the same Yammy Reciever. I love it, it rules.

Default Same problems

I've noticed the same flickering problems on a few episodes on different discs. Very annoying. It typically happens in dark areas/shadows with a white static strobing effect. Has anyone had any luck with a replacement disc?

I'm using a PS3 via HDMI to a Samsung HLS-5087 DLP @ 1080P

Just got my copy today via amazon. Using the PS3 and a Sony XBR3 with HDMI, I haven't had any problems in that area. I went back and rewatched it a second time with no issues.
