Default PS3 SD DVD scaler adds bad edge enhancement

Hi,

Sorry for starting a new thread on this issue, but I am hoping by raising the issue here, Sony insider(s) can see the problems I observed and maybe remedy them in the future firmware revisions. PS3 is a wonderful blu-ray player, matter of fact, I am the proud owner of 2 original 60 GB versions.

Equipment setup:
Sanyo Z4 front projector (native 720p) projecting approx 100" size screen from PS3 via HDMI connections. AVR is Yamaha v661. All SD DVD filter settings set to 1. PS3 system resolution is set to 720P.

Photo equipment:
Canon Rebel SLR camera mounted on tripod and using delay timer to carefully take each screen shot so to eliminate shakes and inconsistencies from me (excuse my poor photo skills). Same exact setting is used for all photo still shots, only differences was toggling of PS3 scaler option from "OFF" to "Normal"

SD DVD movie used:
Raiders of the Lost Ark, from Indiana Jones trilogy 4-disc box set. The movie is THX remastered with bit rates ranging from high 4s to high 8 Mbit/sec. Very good transfer as far as SD DVD is concerned.

Extreme Close Up @ 480p (PS3 scaler set to "OFF", 720p image is scaled by my Sanyo Z4) Excuse the screen door effect, due to extreme close up on an LCD front projector.

Notice how wonderful the PS3 de-interlace engine is performing. Very natural and smooth.

Extreme Close up @ 720P (PS3 scaler set to "Normal", so image is scaled to 720P and Sanyo projector is displaying it natively)

Noticed the heavy edge enhancement "halos" or noises on just about every line/edge there.

Full screen shot @ 480P

Very natural look to it. Excellent scene.

Full screen shot @ 720P

Edge enhancement galore, it is every where. Makes the scene look artificial and processed. It maybe difficult to get the feeling from looking at this photo, but when viewed @ 100" screen, it is very noticeable to a point of being annoying.

I hope insider(s) or people with connection to SCEA can pass this info along. Thanks for reading....

So if everything is the same, how come when you switch from off (480) to normal (720), the image remains the same size? So the PS3 is outputing 480 and your TV is scaling that to 720, and then you have the PS3 scaling 480 into 720 and the TV should not be scaling that. Maybe the 720 output is passing through the TV's scaling circuit, so it's processed twice?

Anyway, the time I did a quick check on the AVIA DVD pattern, it seemed fine. If I have the time I'll check closer.

Yes, at 480P, the image is scaled by my Sanyo Z4 projector. @720P, it is scaled by PS3's internal scaler and projected it as is. I am not sure if the projector is processing the native 720P output from PS3 again or not(Anyone with extensive knowledge of how Sanyo Z4 works can jump in).

I am posting this so others like yourself can verify or disprove my observations.

The PS3 does an excellent job of upscaling. Allthough, I use my A30 now to save my PS3. I don't think SONY will improve it, they expect you to buy BD's now.

I haven't noticed any issues with added edge enhancement, and I've become pretty sensitive to it over the years. I had a Denon 1930ci (I think that was it) for about a day or two . . . the PS3 works much better than that. I just watched Raiders a couple weeks ago as a matter of fact, and didn't see anything. Granted, I'm on a 61", not 100", but I think I would have noticed some of that, cuz that's pretty bad in those screen caps. Not Die Hard With a Vengeance bad, but very noticeable.

As I have said many times previously, PS3 is not the best upscaler although it is the best blu-ray player, IMO. I use my PC for upscaling. It does a better job. However, lots of people are satisfied with the PS3 upscaling, hence Sony may concentrate on improving other aspects of PS3.

With the new firmware(version 2.30) it appears that the Sony engineers have altered the way the PS3 upscales dvd content. I notice a tad softer image on upconverted dvd than what the older firmware produced. I also noticed the edge enhancement. It's hard to say what is going on here but something has definitely changed.
