Default 1080p/24 question

I'm aware folks are concerned about the PS3's future 1080p/24 capabilities, but a couple of things stump me, so if someone could explain or point me at the right thread i'd appreciate it. first, why would LESS frames/sec make for a better PQ (most material runs @ 30fps i think???)? I know it has something to do w/the refresh rate of the display and fps matching as even #s, but i don't see why. plus, could you solve the whole situation if you were able to pick up one of those 120hz sets where both 24 & 30 work out to whole #'s? I prob sound like a total retard throwing these terms around but this concept escapes me. school a brother, huh?

Movies are filmed and encoded on BD at 24fps. When they are shown on 60hz displays a process called 3:2 pulldown is applied to make the two compatible. This process often introducs "motion judder" into the picture. Basically a 24fps feed into a compatible display will allow for a smoother judder free picture.

Digging up an older thread here . . . when I'm watching BD's on my PS3 and I hit "info" for my Samsung tv, it always comes up 1920X1080/60hz. Does this TV not accept 24hz, or is this a limitation of the PS3? I know it supports it, but as it's an automatic or off setting, there's no way to just set it to on.

Most TVs that accept a 24P input still apply 3:2 pulldown to get 1080P60. The only way to eliminate the judder is to show it at a multiple of 24.
Most people(as in your average person) won't even notice the judder anyway except with something like the scrolling credits.

The Samsung HL-S6187W DLP is a 60HZ display. All PS3’s that are running firmware version 1.80 or later have 1080P/24 support. The info button is the best way to see what signal your receiving. Since your display does not support 1080P/24 the PS3 is transmitting 1080P/60 and that is why the Samsung says it is receiving 60HZ 1080P signal.

When the PS3 is in the automatic mode it tries 1080P/24 first. If your Samsung 1080P could accept 1080P/24 it would say 24HZ when you hit the info button. The PS3 is automatically switching to 60HZ since the Samsung informed the PS3 that it can not receive 1080P/24 but only 1080P/60.

The samsung would still take the 1080P24 and apply 3:2 pulldown to get 1080P60. The question is does the PS3 do it better or the Samsung. It's easier to just have the PS3 do it in that situation assuming you can't see a difference.

Its the source. Plain and simple.

If something comes decoded as 1080p/24hz then that is the best way t display it. If it comes at 1080p/60hz then that is the best way to display it.

PS3 can do both. It really matters what the source is, after that it matters what the display is.

Artifacting can occur if neither match. PS3 doesn't really make a difference as it will choose what it can do.

Good stuff. I don't really notice it, except for, like soneone said, in the credits, and that's if I'm standing close to the tv.

I have the same Samsung HD, and I was told by Samsung that it can output at 1080/24p. and indeed the info button indicates output at 1920x1080/24hz.My player is the BDP-S1, but that should not be a factor.

This is what their FAQ says on the support site:

How Many Frames Per Second (FPS) Do Samsung DLP TVs Display?
Current Samsung DLP TVs display at a rate of thirty (30) frames per second.

I would think they would promote it more in their sales brochures. On the other hand FAQ's can easily be out of date.

Check this out:
"Samsung's Cinema Smooth 3:2 pull-down film mode corrects for the artificial frames created when films are converted to DVDs. The result is a clearer image without the subtle motion artifacts caused by 24-to-30 frames per second video conversion."
http://www.audiovideoreviews.net/inf...080p_DLP_HDTV/

That seems to indicate that it is still at 30 but they can "work around" the issue, doesn't it?

If you go into the TV's picture menu is it on "Film Mode"? (Assuming this is what they are talking about.) If it is switch it to Dynamic or Standard, any change?

Edit: I checked on mine and I do not see the same data you are seeing. If you press Info on your TV remote control what does it say on screen?

I can only get mine to say 1080p/60 . . . I'll have to double check my settings when I get home.

Here's a good thread to check out:
Models Of Displays And Hd Players That Support 1080p/24 Signal
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=5155&page=6

Read the first post, I did a search on Samsung in the thread but don't see it. Maybe the Samsung sets are on their way to the market.

Shatta, that thread may help answer your questions too.

1080p/24 shows up at 1080p/60. Don't worry about it

The entire HL-TXX87/89 series will do it
