Criterion Rushmore (1998)

Let's have a Rushmore thread.

I've been reading the book "The Wes Anderson Collection".

Here's an interesting quote:

Wes Anderson (talking about Rushmore & Bill Murray):

"We didn't have so much money, and we probably proposed some deal, and I think he said, "Just give me my SAG day rate." So he ended up doing it for not $375,000 or something as the reduced price. He ended up doing it for like nine thousand dollars.
He did it for zip. He had a good profit participation, but he essentially said, "This is pro bono."

Can't believe there wasn't one for this already.

I just watched my copy of this last week. It was a blind buy from the previous Barnes and Noble Criterion sale. I loved the movie, and the special features were great.

Bill Murray doing Rushmore for basically nothing was also mentioned in the special features.

One of my all-time favorites and I often flip flop over whether I like this or The Royal Tennenbaums better. The Criterion disc looks and sounds great. I was a bit disappointed they didn't spring for a new retrospective/interviews.

Wes Anderson's films are unusual for me and difficult to rank. I can't fairly rate any until I have seen them at least twice because I always get more out of his films the second time around. Some I didn't like much first time (Moonrise Kingdom) and loved the second time. Some I loved the first time and didnt enjoy much the next or the next or the next (The Royal Tenenbaums).

1. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
-Not necessarily his best but its my personal favourite.
2. Rushmore
-Undoubtedly his best film. That was immediately clear.
3. Fantastic Mr. Fox
-Too many great lines, hilarious moments where civility is abandoned in favour of temporarily returning to their savage animal roots for brief moments. Flawless voice acting for the most part which isn't present in even some of the best Pixar films.
4. Moonrise Kingdom
-DID.NOT.GET.IT! The hype was so massive for this one and while I adored the visuals and soundtrack, the acting from the lead kids left me cold and confused as to whether I was seriously supposed to give two shits about them. They weren't unlikeable, they just had no presence at all. Second viewing I loved almost everything about it. The two main kids still stop it from ever being a incredible but everything else was so enjoyable that it didn't bother me much.
5. Bottle Rocket
-I have no real issues with Bottle Rocket. In fact I think it's great but I don't return to it very often anymore. My reasoning is mostly shallow. It's not nearly as handsome as all his other films. It's a terrifically scripted film though.
6. The Darjeeling Limited
-I actually love Hotel Chavalier and would've ranked that considerably higher but to me, they are not two, they are one (if the movie is fresh in your mind, you'll get the pun). Funnily enough, even though this is one of my least favourite's, I re-watch this more than many others I've ranked higher and it has Hotel Chevalier to thank for that. It always gets me excited to watch The Darjeeling Limited. SOMETHING about this movie keeps dragging me back. The set pieces are among Anderson's most beautiful which is definitely a contributing factor but there's something else. I don't love this film, but it keeps dragging me back for more. It's a bit like a mean girlfriend who just turns me on too much to let her go and admit she just isn't that great overall.
7. The Royal Tenenbaums
-Often considered the best film Anderson ever made and rightfully so. I thought so the first time I watched it (I felt it was on par with Rushmore) but every repeat viewing makes me feel more and more irritated towards it. Don't get me wrong, there's stuff I like about it and its a much better made film than The Darjeeling Limited but its the one Anderson film I enjoy less every time I watch it. It's a personal issue but this is my personal ranking after all.

RIP Kumar.

Wes Anderson pays tribute to Kumar Pallana in USA Film Festival video

The USA Film Festival assembled a special tribute video to Kumar Pallana featuring Wes Anderson at Texas Theatre, November 7, 2013.

Quote:
My old friend Matt Zoller Seitz’s sold-out (!) The Wes Anderson Collection was the reason for Thursday night’s screening of Bottle Rocket at the Texas Theatre. But even in his absence, Kumar Pallana was the star.

Luke Wilson and Kumar Pallana at the premiere of Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums (AP Photo/Touchstone Pictures, Eric Charbonneau/BEI)

The former yoga master who returned to his long-dormant acting career thanks to Anderson and Owen Wilson died in October, two months shy of his 95th birthday. Before the screening, friends and family stood in a spotlight at the foot of the stage to share stories about Kumar, an experience both joyous and heartbreaking. His daughter Sandhya was there; so too son Dipak, the former Cosmic Cup proprietor who came in from Oakland just for the occasion. Dipak joined Matt for the post-screening Q&A, during which he shared early-days stories of Anderson and Wilson coming into the vegetarian eatery on Oak Lawn for the smoothies and chess matches.

Anderson made an appearance as well in the terrific tribute reel assembled by the USA Film Festival. It was a surprise to everyone in the audience, which included Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore. Ann Alexander, managing director of the USA Film Festival, reached out to the filmmaker a week after Pallana’s death to see if he would record something for the highlight reel.

“I wrote him a letter asking him if he would join us virtually,” says Alexander. “Sandhya passed my note to his assistant,” and within a few days they had his tribute in hand.

“It just worked out,” Alexander says. “It almost looks like he’s taking over the clip reel. We knew he’d been in touch with the family to express his condolences. I wouldn’t have reached out to him if that hadn’t taken place, just to be respectful. But I thought it would be an appropriate request. And how kind of him, ya know?”

Says Anderson of his old friend, Kumar was “one of the few people I would say was genuinely wise.” I won’t spoil the rest.

Thursday night “was not the evening we imagined,” says Alexander, who was planning the screening and book-signing looks before Pallana’s death. “But it was the evening it was supposed to be.”

Sorry for not joining in with the Wes Anderson love-in, as most of his stuff I can take or leave, but I love the shit out of Rushmore. Criterion's Blu-ray is superb (as was the DVD before it).

I love all of Anderson's films to varying degrees...except for The Life Aquatic because I still haven't seen it. I've been holding off on it in the hope that it would come out on blu-ray. The wait is becoming interminable.

^ Agree. But then I can't stand Fantastic Mr. Fox, and I've tried really hard. I do appreciate the technical aspects though, just not the story. Always enjoy the Rushmore and TRT BDs, looking forward to The Life Aquatic on blu from whoever.

Never seen this film yet I am a huge Bill Murray fan. He lives in my city and is part owner of the minor league baseball team here. Anyway, i saw this last night at B&N and I plan to stop by one more time this evening before the 40% off sale ends and purchase a few more Criterions. I just wanted to know if this is worth a blind buy since it will only come up to about $18 after discounts.

I've never been a big Wes Anderson fan, but I've adored this movie since I first saw it in theaters years ago. I think I have been disappointed by his other movies because I keep going into them expecting something like Rushmore.

I HATED it on first watch and absolutely loved it on second. If you haven't seen any other Wes Anderson movies, I don't know if you'd like it or not. If you're looking for a zany Bill Murray performance you're not going to get it. The main character of the film is an extremely immature but brilliant teen who falls in love with his teacher, and Bill Murray is a lonely rich guy in a loveless marriage who falls for the same teacher. It is a quirky film with plenty of laughs, but it doesn't shy away from the awkwardness and pain of the various characters. If you can remember what it was like to be a stupid, impetuous teenager in love with someone you could never have, then you'll probably be able to relate to the main character and love it. If not, you'll probably just find him obnoxious and terrible and might hate the movie.

I think Royal Tenenbaums might be the "easier" entrance into the Wes Anderson filmography, but I think Rushmore is widely considered his best. I like them about equally.

Thanks, bottle rocket is one of my favorite films of all time. I think this film sounds interesting enough to blind buy and I think we all can relate to the feeling that the main character had. I'll probably pick up Royal Tenenbaums as well.
