Default Do you import titles? If so why?

Just curious to see who here has imported movies from another region. I've order three UK boxsets for a huge discount over what their North American counterparts would have costed.

What have you imported and why?

This year I imported Fast Six, Night of the Living Dead, Vertigo, and Transformers The Movie because they are not available in the US.

I import if the blu-ray isn't available in the States (A Touch of Evil), is significantly cheaper (Hitchcock, Bond and Universal Monsters sets) or is superior to the region A release (Basic Instinct).

Either:

1.) It's much cheaper
2.) It's better (PQ/AQ, Extras, and/or packaging in some cases)
3.) You can't find it in the US

Same as everyone else....I've bought region-free blu's from Amazon UK (Universal Monsters, Alien Anthology, Lethal Weapon & Die Hard Collections, etc) because they were either cheaper or not available in the US or both. I have Two Mules for Sister Sara, Rooster Cogburn, The War Wagon, Joe Kidd, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance sitting in my Wish List right now, just waiting to pull the trigger. Those 5 will cost me less than $60 USD and I don't have wait 9 months or more for the US versions to become available.

I import all the time, mostly from the U.S and sometimes Canada. I import if the transfer is better, if it has more bonus content and if I prefer the artwork/packaging to what we get here in the UK.

The latest title I will be importing is the Man of Steel Target Digibook because it's a Digibook, I love the design and it has some extra content.

Yep, I have plenty of imports. Usually it's because there are BDs abroad that are not available in the U.S. Also, there are international titles that sometimes have better PQ/AQ and/or extras and the U.S. disc.

I import as well, for mostly the same reasons as above. There are not too many in my collection so far and I stick to region-free releases as I don't have a region free player.

Titles acquired from UK (Amazon.co.uk):

Let The Right One In - proper subtitles, plus commentary track
Philadelphia - didn't care to buy Twilight Time release
The Elephant Man - not available in North America

And one from Australia (Sanity.com.au):

Lord of War - Marginally better transfer, but mainly purchased for commentary track

I mostly buy cult/horror films and it all boils down to what's available already in the States or whether there's a better option overseas (price or quality). Compare Twilight Time's The Fury which used an old and crummy master versus Arrow Video's release where they made an all-new telelcine from the negative. Huge difference in quality.

Some genres, such as the Italian sword-and-sandal genre, are better represented in foreign territories. Some of these films are available in the US in poor color and panned-and-scanned editions, while their European counterparts are often widescreen and feature superior color. One example: Cornel Wilde's SWORD OF LANCELOT is on about 20 poor-quality public domain DVDs in the US, but the German PAL is anamorphic widescreen and has very good color.

There are a number of excellent English language dramas that are only available on European PAL DVD, such as THE EFFECT OF GAMMA RAYS ON MAN-IN-THE-MOON MARIGOLDS and THE GLASS MENAGERIE (1987).

There are some Euro releases of European horror films that have more explicit footage than the US versions, such as Artus Films' PAL DVDs of BLOOD OF THE VAMPIRE and BLOODY PIT OF HORROR (aka CRIMSON EXECUTIONER).

The above is why I import from websites and when I'm in Thailand visiting family, I buy movies and CDs there because of the same reasons.

I've imported three titles that I can recall off-hand -- there maybe be 1 or 2 more:

Universal Monsters
UK set -- price, plain and simple. It was much cheaper than the US version.

Woodstock -- The UK set was cheaper at the time, and it had all the extras that were scattered across several "exclusive" US versions.

Alien Anthology -- Again from the UK, and again because (at the time) it was much cheaper than the US version.

I can't really afford the Hitchcock Masterpiece set this close to Christmas, but if I could I'd grab the UK version. It's about $70 shipped for 14(!) films right now.

Why limit oneself to one quarter (your native country's Blus) of the world's selection of Blu-rays when you can access all the Blu-rays from anywhere in the world?

Most people have no problem ordering things online nowadays so I dont know what the excuse is to not own a multi-region player?

Funny Face from Sweden, and it was region free
Silent Hill from France, just because it's supposed to have a better PQ than US version.

I've only imported from Amazon UK. Most recently I ordered the Halloween Steelbook and Beverly Hills Cop 2.

i'm from Australia and 99% of my collection is from the US. I started collecting blu rays before they really caught on here. The prices over here when they first appeared were ridiculous. I think i only own 2 Aussie releases. The other 1 percent is imported from the UK. Prices have gotten a bit better in Australia but i still prefer to shop on Amazon. Plus i hate our stupid rating logos

Thumbs up Import both DVDS & BDS!

Yes, my region-free bd player gets a workout!

1. Cheaper
2. Different region
3. Get the Title much earlier
4. Titles not available here in the US
