Default Why isn't it 1080p?

So, I have my Blu-Ray player hooked up by HDMI to my Samsung 50" 1080p plasma. But when I play a Blu-Ray movie, the TV's display function states that the signal resolution is 1080i. Why is that? Since the player, disc and TV are all 1080p, why doesn't it say 1080p?

whats the model number of your tv?

...some "1080p" TV's cannot accept a 1080p signal, they merely upscale 720p/1080i into 1080p.

Not saying that is the answer, but we need to know more about your setup...also what movie are you watching?

what's the model number of your Television..... I don't want to jump to too many conclusions, but I'm guessing you don't actually have a 1080p t.v.

What player are you using???? if it's a PS3, you have to run through the "settings" etc......

little more info... we'll figure it out!

Perhaps on your player there is a setting where u select the max resolution you would like to use.. 1080p is prob not ticked..

Happened to me with the PS3.. didnt know what was wong - 1080p blu rays playing at 1080i on a 1080p tv!! so annoying! all i had to do was select 1080p under display settings...

Hope this might help!

On my PS3 - you'll find it under settings... all boxes were automatically ticked up to 1080i... had to tick 1080p then it worked perfectly!

If your television deinterlaces properly, there won't be any difference!

1080p24 = 1080i60 = 1080p24

It's a lossless conversion when done properly.

Okay, here are some answers for you:

First of all, every Blu-ray movie I've tried does this. Secondly, here are my specs:

The TV is a Samsung, Model Code: FTP5084X/XAA
The Blu-Ray player is a Sony, Model Number: BDP-S300

I just checked out the various menu options on the TV and BD player. Unfortunately, I didn't find any options that allowed me to manually control the selected resolution.

Hope that info helps. Thanks in advance for your help everyone.

SOLVED!

Thanks for all your help everyone....but I FINALLY figured it out. Turns out there was a very tiny button on my Blu-ray remote that needed selecting. It was set to "Auto", which you would think would prompt the machine to set itself in 1080p since all important criteria for 1080p are in place. But, this was not the case. So, once I found that elusive little button, I just manually set the picture to 1080p and VOILA!...it's all good. Thanks everyone.

Does 1080p looks significantly better than 1080i? Just curious.

it is possible that it has something to do with the model of the TV that you have. It could be a 1080i. or maybe you to set your TV to 1080p before watching the movie.

1080p content is definitely better than 1080i content for fast movements (action, dancing, sports etc.). If the content is on 1080/24p (i.e. blu-ray movies), you may convert to 1080i if the TV does not accept 1080p and this will not degrade the signal if it is done correctly.
