today a friend of mine at work came and was talking to me about his upgrade to xbox elite. he said he was going to buy the hd-dvd add on in a few weeks. his reason was that, and I quote ''hd-dvd has disney exclusively, and they have a lot of movies we (he and his wife) want to get''. after I picked my jaw up off the floor I calmly informed him that disney was in fact blu-ray exclusive. as is fox and sony pictures. soooooo he decided to hold off on throwing his money away. I couldn't convince him to return or cancel his order for the xbox elite. but he won't be buying any hd dvds or the add on player.
has anyone else had these moments of helping friends and strangers with their consumer confusion? I have more but I thought this one was pretty funny. |

Hmm.. I've had friends say, they we're getting an Xbox add-on to watch HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.
That Hi-Def looks no better then SD.. and will never make an impact. And that Blu-Ray is only appealing to "Anal retentive videophiles". Along with others.. they are just some I found funny ![]() |

There is a local Rental place I go to every once in a while. The owner was talking with a customer about HD-DVD and that he stocks some of them. I asked him about Blu-ray and he said he decided against it. Why I ask, and out comes the typical 'M$/Tosh Sony is bullshit (I use only Sony but it sucks

I've tried to correct DVDEmpire (through e-mail) re: their BR vs. HDDVD FAQ. while much of it is technically correct, statements like "HDDVD has a production process similar to DVD, so it can get faster market saturation w/titles" is just plain wrong - well, the first part is correct, but "faster market saturation" is proven wrong right on their own website - they carry like 30 more titles on BR than HDDVD! Plus for their answer to the FAQ "why should I choose HDDVD over bluray, they stated that the head start HDDVD had coming to market as an advantage, but we know THAT "advantage" never materialized. Their answer to the FAQ "why should I choose BluRay does address the extra space, but not the higher bitrates. nothing's changed as yet, anyone else wanna bug 'em about updating their FAQ? some of the outdated info skews abit (unfairly) in HDDVDs' direction.

hd dvd uses the same red laser that dvds use which has proven itself successful, blu-ray uses a blue laser that has had quite a few problems and is far from proving itself as a better laser than the red one.
seriously, this person shouldn't ever be allowed to talk again. |

I don't like resurrecting my own threads but I had another funny run in with the miss informed yesterday.
I was at blockbuster and asked if it was one of the 1700 stores that would stock blu ray. the clerk said ''well we're not sure yet. is blu ray the way everyone is going now?'' ''yes, sometimes the best do win'' I said back. ''i don't know,'' he replied ''i usually like to go with the most support for both players and studios. Right now blu ray only has sony players and sony pictures.'' after making sure I wasn't crazy and did hear what I heard I informed the clerk that ''toshiba is the only hardware company that supports hd dvd with stand alone players, and universal is the only major studio that supports hd dvd exclusivley.'' some of the other customers in line were listening to us, the clerk got a little embarassed. so I wrote www.blu-ray.com on a sticky note he had and told him it was a great place to learn about it. |

A customer came up to me the yesterday and asked where the HD DVD and Blu-ray movies were (which is a little strange because usually people ask for specifically one or the other). We got over there and he seemed most impressed with HD DVD. He said it was because they had more choices. I had to pause for a moment before answering, in part because I was a little stunned, and also I wasn't sure where to begin to correct him, as I had many options to start with. I politely informed him of the less studio, less CE support, less titles, etc.....He seemed humbled by what I was saying. I tried to balance it out in the end by telling him that he should go with the format that plays the movies he wants to see, and that some people wind up choosing to own both so they can see it all. As much as I support Blu-ray, I try not to come off as an advocate for either format, but inform customers of the differences and let them come to their own conclusions.

I get the usual it doesn't look any different, or it doesn't sound any better. Also had a really decent one a person was in my store, I sell Light Fixtures, but will talk to anyone about anything, anywho, they said and I quote, "We tried to play a Blu-Ray, but they have a special coating on them that won't let them play in normal DVD players." I just about lost it, didn't laugh at them which was very hard, then politely explained that they do in fact have a scratch resistant surface and that it only plays in a Blu-Ray player.

Pretty much any M$ created FUD. The most notable of which is that porn isn't HD-DVD exclusive.
On a related note, I got to own a Radioshack store owner about his lack of knowledge on HDTV resolution, Blu-ray and the PS3 last Christmas. The idiot actually tried to argue with me that 1080i was superior to 1080p and that as a result Blu-ray/PS3 was inferior to HD-DVD/ Xbox 360. I haven't been back to that place since. |

Let's see here...
I had a visitor think Blu-ray was a proprietary Sony format, told him my fav Greyhound quote: "That's wrong; I can tell you're gonna need some more homework." He also wrongly thought no Sony-backed format ever succeeded, until I informed him that CD and DVD, just like BD, were co-developed by Sony. I also had someone think that Blu-ray movies won't work on existing TVs. And finally: someone who thought IME/PiP weren't possible on Blu-ray. |

I hear from some people that movies produced after Octover 31st won't play on the older Blu-Ray players making them obsolete. I correct them and tell them that all of the movies will play on all blu-ray players (including the older ones). They might not play some features like the PIP features or web based content but they will diffently play the movies nad majority of the extras.

I hear so much stuff about each on the jobs (electrical but we install HT's). My favorite is not quite about -blu/hd but about reg dvd. When people think "upscale" dvd players turn dvds into 1080 i/p. So they think they never need to buy anything else for the $3000+ TVs. I always sell blu-ray to all of customers. I tell them one day everything will be on blu.
