I was just on Craigslist and some one is selling an LCD. In their post the person states that it is the best possible pic and unlike plasma it won't burn in. I understand that they are trying to sell their television. But are people still under the ideal that plasmas burn in? You have to work damn hard from what I understand to get burn in on a plasma now. I own a plasma and its beautiful, I just think that people are still afraid of buying them or are sales people or other sources steering them clear of them?
I'm done ranting. |

It is still a misconception - although I am unsure of how lower-end plasmas such as LGs or Vizios deal with burn-in - the threat of that in the Panasonics and Pioneers is eliminated.
My next TV upgrade is definitely a 50"+ plasma from either of the aforementioned two manufacturers. |

i own a samsung series 4 plasma, and its ace, i had a series 5 LCD and this knocks the spots off it, the LCD had terrible retention when using the PS3 where the plasma has none, the screen is also pretty black when showing blacks, and the contrast is fine. IMHO plasma is better than LCD. and it only cost £533

plasma owners, leave your menu screen up for a few hours and see if you get burn in. have you ever fallen asleep during a dvd and wake up in the middle of the night and it is on the menu screen? burn in is real and it may be true that higher end plasmas deal with it better (i have even seen burn in on lcds!!!) but burn in will happen to anything.

image retention bugs the heck out of me too... so no need to brush it off like it shouldn't matter to anyone. Plasmas need to do some pixel shifting to stop it from burning in permanently. LCDs don't need to. The guy just wanted to do a sales pitch on his LCD by bagging out plasmas... so bloody what, get over it LOL

yeah but i am very compulsive and i hate the "image retention" left after a few games of madden. one of the main reasons i got a bigscreen xbr over a panny plasma was i would always be paranoid, the second was weight due to a weight limit on my floating stand. my next set will be a huge plasma if available (technology has greatly advanced), a huge lcd if price permits( the 70'' sony for 34k is a little steep, i would go 10k tops) or a projection set up.

the image retention/burn-in thing is pretty much history but thats not to say it doesn't still exist... I had a customer return a samsung plasma after a weekend of owning it because he got "burn-in".... turns out it was temporary image retention and after running programming for a while it went away... but what had happened was he put it on the Vivid or whatever mode and then accidentally left the house with his cable on channel 5 (guide channel) and the outline of the guide was retained... its not like burn-in can't happen... and to the guy who said it can happen on LCDs too... very true... we have LCD monitors at the tills and they all have burn-in from the till program, which is displayed 12 or more hours a day and has been for the last 3 years

Before my pioneer I had a panny 700u and it burned in the lego indiana jones character hub. I played it for a total of 24 hours in 3 days(it tells me my play play time when I completed it). I thought "Well, this is the image retention everyone is talking about." Three weeks later and lots of other programing later and it was still there. So I returned it and bought my new plasma. Didn't scare me away from plasma, just made me realize I needed a plasma that had a "wash mode" and that I have a video game problem.

I know little-to-nothing about plasmas, so correct me if I am wrong.
I have heard that the 'shelf life' of a plasma is A LOT less than an LCD in terms of PQ. While an LCD should be serviceable for up to 15 years for the average user with no drop in PQ, doesn't the plasma's screen begin to degrade noticeably after only 5 years due to it being a plasma (the cells break down over time). Again, this could be another myth that needs to be addressed. |

screen starts to lose colour over time, so in 10 years it would be half as bright, but you wouldnt notice the degradation over time. LCD light tubes can fade and fail also, which means a trip to the shop.
LCD can give 80000 hours use(http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/lcdt...lifetime.shtml) plasma can give 60000 hours use(http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/p...-lifespan.html) i will replace my tv before its had it, as most people will. My last CRT lasted around 5 years then the tube went, so who knows! |
