Default Im in the market

Im about ready to purchase a HDMI reciever and my budget is around 500 give or take a hundred. Ive looked at some yamaha's at best buy thats 499, that supports all the blu audio, true hd, pcm, 7.1 etc, but im want to get your guys opinon on what to look for. I really dont understand "Upconversion" I know that the video signal goes through the reciever and into the TV. Is there recievers that do this better than others, any problems with poorer quality video with this? I guess ill need another HDMI cable, And also with all this new equipment I was thinking about a power conditioner. Right now everything is just hooked up to a surge protector, are power conditioners worth it? Do they actually improve the quality of the signals or are they more or less a protection piece of equipment(i.e. a fancy surge protector) Any help would be appreciated, This is a big investment for me so I want to make sure I just dont buy whats on the shelf cuz its there. Thanks

I think you will find many here like Onkyo. In your price range you could get a great deal on a 605 as they are being replaced by the new 606.

EDIT: You could also get the 606 as Amazon has it for $499 with free shipping.

I say Onkyo 605. best bang for the buck. Just hooked mine up yesterday and it is awesome.

At amazon website they say of the onkyo 606 "Apart from 1080p the TX-sr06 can upscale all video signals to 1080i, regardless of the connection for output via HDMI." So does this mean this reciever cannot output 1080p to my tv, if not that sucks, or maybe im not understanding it right.

Basically, don't depend on a receiver for great upconversion, unless you're looking at a much more expensive one ($2000+).

Like others here, I'm also now a big fan of Onkyo. I bought my 605 refurbished at Ecost.com for $280 shipped, which was a steal. It arrived fast and it sounds like a dream. The only downside is that it only has 2 HDMI inputs, but that's plenty for me, because the only thing I need hooked up to that is the PS3 for lossless audio. I have my roommate's Xbox 360 plugged in as well through HDMI, mainly so he didn't have to buy a special optical cable to plug it in.

Oh, and the 605 has 4 digital audio inputs (2 optical, 2 coax).

So yes, the 605 is certainly the best bang for the buck.

EDIT: If you want 3 HDMI ports and THX certification, I'd take a look at the Onkyo 705: http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR705...9752186&sr=8-1

It does HDMI 1080p passthrough, just not upscaling. So you can't upscale your sources if they're already not 1080p, but it will indeed output 1080p to the TV. It does to my TV!

How does it look? Just like normal, as a blu-player straight to your tv?

He can get the audio from this right? It's $449 new if you want to go that route too

It will pass through a 1080P signal over HDMI but it will upscale any other input type s-video etc to 1080i. For example a BDP300->HDMI->605/606->HDMI->TV will be 1080P a DVD Player->S-video->605/606->HDMI->TV will be 1080i.

I have the 805 and it looks great just like it was when it went direct from player to TV, only now I have a great surround system too.

I have my DirecTV and blu-ray player switching through the receiver. (Onkyo 705) I can't tell any difference at all between it and the BD or DSS plugged straight into the TV.

I would highly recomend the Yamaha Rv-x663.

I have had mine for about 2 weeks now and so far no problems whatsoever, you can find it online for about 449.99.

You can't go wrong with Yamaha and Onkyo receivers in and around the $400 - $500 mark.

Wait until next month when the new Pioneer VSX-1018TXV is released. It'll retail for around $600, but you'll be able to get it for a lot less than that from online sellers. This Pioneer receiver will be the first non-Elite receiver to internally decode both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA (and HR) and have HDMI 1.3 connections as well of course.

I've had the 1016 for the last year and a half and I have nothing but good things to say about it, but the 1018 is the one I'll be upgrading to next month when it's finally released. I've waited long enough for it, and I am dying to finally hear my Blu-rays the way they were meant to be heard in their full HD glory.

I'm trying to hold out for the 1018. I just got my new Polk speakers and am temporarily borrowing my roommates old Sony. It is killing me though, audio can only be passed through an optical cable with this receiver. I want to hear these puppies deliver beautiful noise to my ears. I hope I can hold out for 1 more month.
