Default Onkyo 905 over the rest...

Can anyone justify spending an extra $1000 on the 905 as opposed to the 805? I know the 905 specs say that it has a toraoidal transformer that is supposed to create pristine sound, but how much better sound over their other higher end models? Thanks...

For that money, I think Marantz and Denon Receivers offer a Far Superior Sound..... Listen to them side by side, and note the difference.

You may think it's the Bee's Knees as they say.... so listen to it, you may love the sound from the Onkyo.... I personally don't, and that's what it comes down to, personal preference.

I just (and I mean JUST... as in 3 minutes ago) ordered another receiver for my bedroom, a Marantz SR5001 they have a refurb on sale for $349.00 free HDMI cable (not that it's a big deal since they're cheap as hell) and free ground shipping. Accessories for less or 4less or whatever.

My PS3 decodes the audio, so it'll get me where I need to go.

Here's the thread where I had the questions about it.

good luck!!!

No problem, it's really all past us now...she, in fact, encouraged me to go and buy another one two days ago. I still have to pull "Blood Diamond" out of the drive on the 60 Gb. She even admitted she was acting unlike herself when she did it! I just need to tie down getting a reciever so I can enjoy the other side of high definition.

For what it's worth... I thought about upgrading my Marantz SR7001 with an Onkyo 805 and couldn't get over how much better my Marantz sounded compared to the Onkyo.... listen to a 7002 (or maybe 8002 in that price range) and compare that to the 905.....

Hope I'm not giving you too much homework!!!

Perhaps you should spend the $1000 on a bulletproof glass enclosure.

For the price, the 805 is a tough one to beat. But, I agree, if sound quality is important (especially with music), the Marantz SR8002 is the way to go for the $2k price. I'd get that one over the 905 (I've auditioned both units and also owned an 805 for a few months). The Marantz IMO edges them all out in 2 ch music, but for HT it's a toss up for me with the 905. The 905 does have a Rheon video chip which is a huge plus, but I'd still take the Marantz as I love the sound of that unit.

I couldn't justify $1,000, but you can get one for $1359 from the scratch and dent section on Crutchfield which comes with the full one year warranty.

As for whether or not the sound is "better" - you'd probably only appreciate the difference at very loud levels. The 805, 875 and 905 are all excellent receivers but the power handling on the 905 is definitely tops.

The 905 will give you the ability to bridge your front speakers to 220w/ch for stereo listening and also is the only model to have networking. It also has Onkyo's VLSC which in addition to the separate transformers would give you a cleaner sound, particularly in direct mode.

Scratch and Dent purchases are completely guaranteed.
Any item you purchase from Crutchfield's Scratch and Dent Store is covered by the same guarantees we offer with our brand new products. You get a full manufacturer's warranty and Crutchfield's Money-Back Guarantee

Please note: Scratch and Dent items may lack the paperwork needed to redeem manufacturer rebates and special offers.
So, can you justify an extra $730?

Ha, ha.

Needless to say, it's definitely hard to ignore the 805 at $629 given the components used inside. The DAC's are above most $2,500 receivers, the same found in the $5,000 Denon 5308CI and Yamaha RX-Z11.

For the budget, the 805 is a good one, but like I said..... there's too much that's better sonically at the 905's price range. (but depends what your listening habits are too)

It also depends what your equipment is too. There's better sonic equipment, but at that price range I wouldn't be able to find anything that could drive my multi-channel system at the levels I enjoy listening to music at.
I don't find anything near the 905's price range that has that sort of power, functionality, Reon video processing and DAC's in combination, not without going to a refurbished unit.

(Which is exactly why I'm eyeing up a Denon 3808CI refurbished by Denon for $999 with a 90-day warranty from Denon and 1-year warranty from the dealer in question, who is an authorized Denon B-stock dealer)
