Default Holy Cow Batman Onkyo TX-NR 905

Finally arrived the other day after paying twice for shipping. I fired it up to see if it worked as the box was broken open on a corner and it looked like it had been to Iraq and back. Anyway I haven't hooked the tv, dvd, or anything to it other than speakers and all I can say is wow! I'm in love with music all over again. I haven't even hooked up the Audyssey mic yet ........I'm going to receive better sound apparently when the calibration is done? This I can't imagine. I'd like to say I ran this unit at 0 for almost 3 hours now I'm older so I have no idea what 0 is as per volume level. My ears are still ringing and the neighbours hate me more but oh well. I want to say this heating up issue I think is bogus it gets warm but not hot I don't think it could melt anything. With equipment like this it needs to breathe. Anyway I'm sure I'll need help with the rest of the bells and whistles this unit has to offer I'll name her Trix because it has to be a she it turns me on

Run audyssey on it. I guarantee it'll sound better. I got my 805 on Wednesday and it is mind-blowing!

When you run audyssey on it make sure you are not in the room. Your body will mess it up. So hit test and back up out of there.

I've never heard that before either. Shouldn't it be calibrated with you in the room since you're in the room when listening in most cases?

well, the mic works off of sound.

If you're in the room farting, I could understand.

Lol you know me?? Maybe I should leave the room. So what happens sound is sent through the speakers by the receiver individually. I'm doing this tomorrow so maybe I'll just call all of ya when it all goes horribly wrong

The only way I can see this is if you are sitting in front of the mic, thus the sound waves aren't being accurately picked up from the mic since you are between it and the source channel. I mean your body can throw a loop into things by abnormal refractions and reflections of the sound waves but that should be minimal as long as you are not in direct line of any one of the channels.

yeah, being in the way could be an issue.

...just make sure youre not sitting in the path of a speaker.

music will sound pretty great any which way but loose!

...Movies on the other hand rely on sound location.

In order to achieve a truly flat "room response" the following suggestions are usually given:
  • Turn off all ceiling fans, a/c units or any other extraneous noise
  • Kick out the dog (no barking during the sampling phase)
  • Setup the mic on a tripod
  • Initiate the test tones from "outside" the room (lean in, start it, and then step out before the first tones begin

This seems extreme, but the equalisation curve that Audyssey creates has numerous bands. The presence of a "dead spot" (body) in the room could theoretically affect the measurements.
cool, good to know!

I put my mic on a pillow on the back of the couch head-high.

That is exactly what I was going to say. I was sitting on the couch when I ran it the first time. When I updated my dsp's I read the manual more and It said to not be in the room and keep it quiet. From what I unserstand Your body gets in the way of the test tones and the mike. When I was finished and sat back and listened to some music it did sound better. Movies were better too. In the search for Audio perfection anything is possible. Ask any audiphile.

As far as I've heard the NR905 has a different power supply than the 805/875. It should run cooler than either of those, even though it can pump out more to the speakers.

Thanks for the suggestion I ran aydyssey set up and i must say the sound is better turn out the lights and well they disappear (speakers) until you crank it then of course there inside your head. However can you run audyssey in the different listening modes as it seems to describe adjusting each mode ? Is this the case or is a one time deal?

the 905 uses toroidal power supply vs a regular iron core for efficiency.

regarding heat, the Reon video processor is the guilty one, not the amp. if you run in pure direct mode which disables the video circuit, the receiver runs cool. My DVD player also has a Reon related processor (the Realta) and it gets super hot over the chip area...
