Congrats on your new purchase.

Yeah, I know they still put those burn-in warnings in manual... they do that just to cover their a**, in case something does happen, you know? That's understandable.

You made a good decision going with a plasma! I also picked up my first plasma a few weeks ago. I did about 8-10 hours break in on my plasma. I just set it to cinema mode and lowered the settings.

There's really no need to stress over the break-in period with today's plasmas. I've played very little PS3 on it, maybe 20 mintues total since i've had it, looks amazing! I calibrated it and just enjoying Directv HD and Blu-ray movies. I must have at least 50+ hours on it so far and I've yet to see any signs of IR. It's got a great picture! ENJOY your new plasma

Well if it works for you all right. I think I might have been one of the first to own a plasma on the day. I still regret the price I paid for it. I had it for two years. Now I have an lcd that has many things my plasma didn't have. I still miss a thing or two of my previous plasma but I can't complain about my decision, it was based on the ground of experience.

Good luck anyway.

All those disc are just adjustments. They don't calibrate anything.

You got a newer model? Like the 550 or something? :-)
I'd like to know how much you love it after your few hundred hours

Do you know how much that calibration device costs? Also, from the looks of it, it appears like a difficult tool to use if you don't know much about it. Yesterday, I spoke to a Best Buy employee about calibrating tvs and said it would cost me $300. F*ck that sh*t!

Default *Update*

well, I have about 110 hours on this baby now. It is the new 550 by the way to whomever asked. This is my first plasma and so far I love it. The PQ is amazing the colors are amazing it looks sooooo good. There is some IR (Image Retention) but it goes away pretty quickly. I have played my ps3 with it. I played COD and there was 0 IR with that game and GTA4 the little map in the bottom left stays for a while but goes away after the screen moves around or changes a few times. I need to watch a movie still. Will probably do that this friday so i will let everyone know how that looks. Oh and if anyone is wondering there is a scrolling option to get rid of IR after watching a movie if the black bars do not go away fast enough. I have used it after gaming and it cleans the screen back to normal. so there you have it I love this thing.

And i did not have anyone come in to calibrate it. I just played with the settings for an hour or so until i thought it looked good. Which it does.

I did it myself. There is a massive thread over at avsforum.com that a few people have actually used calibration devices to calibrate this particular plasma (50PZ77U). Not just by going into the picture settings alone, but making changes in the service menu.

This has made a big improvement over the factory settings. Skin tones and colors look very natural now. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a full blown ISF calibration, but it cost me nothing and i really don't see how much better a real ISF calibration would make at this point...At least not enough to justify the $300-400 price. I even had the Directv installer comment on how realistic skin tones looked, especially when i demoed a movie on blu-ray for him. He actually thought it was ISF calibrated

Never ever go off of what a DirecTV installer says. Most of them are complete idiots. When you get a full ISF calibration you get 2 modes one for day and one for night so that you can adjust for ambient light. In addition you get a nice accurate gray scale. This is very noticeable for black and white movies (if your into that thing). It is calibrated not for your eye but by the actual wavelength of color so its fully accurate. Plus you can set it up for each input usually.

I personally know this directv installer and he's also in the process of getting licensed/certified or whatever it is to actually do ISF calibrations. So i'm not getting advice from some random Directv installer. I know what you mean about "most" installers, believe me...

I know that a calibration is not based on the eye. The settings i've made on my plasma are settings that were made by someone using actual calibration devices. Like i stated in my original post, my plasma is not ISF calibrated. It cost me nothing, just a little time changing some settings in the service menu and in the regular picture settings. I got a much better picture compared to what it was out of the box, and it's much better then anything i would of got using one of those picture adjustment DVD's.

With these settings it's "calibrated" in cinema mode for watching movies, mostly on blu-ray, which is what i mostly care about. This setting is dark for sports and regular SD broadcasts, so i use custom mode with some adjustments and it gives a brighter picture for daytime viewing at least. But it does throw the calibration off, since it was set for cinema mode.

A real ISF calibration done on MY actual plasma would probably give me a better picture, but i don't want to spend $300-400 at this point, especially on a $1700 plasma. I'm satisfied with the picture. If i had the latest and greatest 60" pioneer Kuro that would cost over 3x what my Panasonic cost me, i would seriously consider an actual ISF calibration.

Sorry to the OP for hijacking your thread!

Exactly, I was just giving a reasonably priced way to adjust his new TV without being bent over for a "professional" calibration.
