Default My PS3 sounds like a jet engine lately

the slightest increase in operation or even idle the PS3 fans are extremely loud. I have the first generation 60 GB model. I've had it for a year now, and the thing is ridiculously noisy now. anyone noticing the same thing?

Experiences seem to vary. Mine is relatively quiet. I think space a distance cause many of these difference. I sit 12-15' away from mine so I rarely ever hear it. It's in a cabinet that reflects sound so occasionally I can hear something.
How close do you sit to it? There are multiple speeds the fan hits (you can hear it ramp up), which "gear" would you say its in? Mine never gets beyond 2nd. And of course, is there plenty of ventilation around it?

Both of mine (60-gig PS3s) are still quiet and I hope it stays that way. Also, one of them has been running 24/7 since the folding@home client was released. I have been wondering how long the fan would last in that one though but so far it's fine.

You need to clean it out. Unfortunately, I don't think the 60 gig model, which I also have, has the built-in cleaning feature of the newer models. Either get a hand vac, or a vacuum with a soft brush attachment on the end, and carefully suck the dust out of the vents. You could also get a can of compressed air to blow it out, just make sure you don't shoot it into the disc slot.

Hopefully that will help out. If you've got too much dust and grit in there, it might not quiet down without having the fan bearing cleaned. I wouldn't recommend doing that yourself though.

For preventative measure, I tend to keep a dust cover on mine when it's not in use, and I regularly clean around my gear to keep dust levels down. I've had mine since the PS3's launch, and it's still whisper quiet.

Default Try keeping it cool

I have the 80GB, and usually it's quiet, but there are times when you can hear the fans kick in really loud, and that's usually when it gets hot in the room. If you have an AC try to turn it on, if it gets to warm in the room, it seems to help.

I keep mine on 24/7 cause of Folding@Home, so I've been considering buying this fan unit I saw at Sears, I think Best Buy has them too, I just don't know how loud that may be. ...hopefully not as loud as the PS3 fans.

I have a supplementary fan on mine, and it works really well. I only use it though if temperatures are really warm, or if I leave the PS3 on for a prolonged period for downloading of folding@home.

I accidentally bought two fans online - the Pelican Aircooler and the Nyko Intercooler - so I was able to compare both first hand before returning one. If you're looking for a fan, which isn't a bad idea if your PS3 is in an enclosed cabinet or it's really hot in your area, definitely get the Pelican Aircooler. While it does add fan noise, it's not that much. It also contains a built-in thermostat, so it varies fan speed based on temperature. It will also run after the PS3 is off to aid cooling. The Pelican fan has its own power supply, so you can turn it on and off independently of the PS3. If you're watching a Blu-ray film, just leave the Pelican off to minimize fan noise. Plus, the Pelican fan's fit and finish matches the PS3 perfectly, and it even includes matching trim in either chrome or matte black (20 gig).

The Nyko Intercooler is considerably louder than the Pelican fan and shares its power supply. The Nyko version also has a manual fan control dial instead of a built-in thermostat. Unfortunately though, if I remember correctly, you can't turn the Nyko version off when it's connected. There's something loopy like that. Finally, the Nyko version looks horrible on the PS3. It's a blocky brick of a unit that connects on the rear of the unit. When visible it completely detracts from the PS3's great lines.

The PS3 does an admirable job of cooling itself, but under certain conditions supplemental cooling will help ensure the PS3 lasts as long as possible. If you give it a try, get the Pelican Aircooler and avoid the Nyko Intercooler.

Mine does the same thing...I can't wait to get it into something enclosed so I don't have to hear it anymore. I have cleaned it a couple of times, but fan is still making noise.

I just dread the day it dies...because you can't really replace a 60 GB PS3...

My fan is really loud right now. When I watch a BD or DVD its LOUD! It never used to be like that, however since we are having a small heat wave... I think that has something to do with it since the room temp. is higher now. I could be wrong though.

no..The 60 gig does not have this cleaning thing everybodys talking about, sony said by doing that you can burn out your chipset. so dont do it, i think the same goes for the 40 gig.

heres a video of how to do(for 60 gig)

How to clean your PS3 40gig not 60gig by testing your fans, I was talking to some random guy I meet at a game stop and he told me what to do. I’m sure you can see a video demonstrating how to test the fan online. The only difference is I will be holding the PS3 off of the table so the fan part of the PS3 will be facing down.
1.
First turn off the PS3, take off all cables except the power cable, and then place the PS3 vertically with the PS3 logo being upside down.
2.
Ok hold down the eject button, and turn on the PS3. Immediately pick the PS3 up off of the table about five to six inches, so the air can circulate with out bringing back in the dust. This would run for twenty seconds, the red light power light would flash.
3.
Flip the PS3 so the logo would be right side up, and turn the PS3 off and then on. The guy told me it helped quiet his PS3.

My PS3 has been a little noisy lately... I took it over to a friends house since he just bought a new home and thought a little GTAIV would be a nice way to break it in. I set it up vertically, ran it for a few hours there, then watched 3:10 to Yuma on Blu-Ray and the fan was noticeable. Brought it home and gamed a bit today and the fan didn't click into overdrive for the first time in a while.
