http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/televisi...model=40RF350U
or http://www.consumer.philips.com/cons...V+42TA648BX-37 They're both the same price. The Philips will be a 42". Warranty and stuff is no concern. They're both through Costco. |

It's between those two, no other options.

Quite honestly, being Costco (and if you can afford to front the $$), buy them both and compare them at home for awhile using the same source material. Once you decide which one you like better, return the other within 90 days. They've got the best resturn policy!
This will assure you that you've made the right choice, and will prevent the "what-if's" later down the road. My 2-cents. |

The Phillips gives you their contrast ratio, response time, and other specs where the other model doesn't. Is the other model trying to hide something?
I would go with the Phillips, but really if you can't tell the difference between the two, I'd just go with whatever your gut says. |

I don't think that a Sony or Samsung hae anything major over the Tosh and Philips. This isn't our main TV.
It's hard... |

Just picked the Phillips up at Costco on monday after my Aquos let the magic smoke out on me. Lucky for me I bought the Sharp at Costco before they changed the return policy last year, they took the Sharp back. With the 200 dollar off coupon i walked out with a new set on the house. Two thumbs up for costco and there customer service!!
![]() It was between this or the 42" Vizio for me, I liked the overall look of the Phillips. Also the stats on paper seemed a little bit better then the Vizio. Anyways on to the set...Out of the box I thought the setting were really bad, but after a few hours of playing with them Iam alot happier now. Still waiting on the DVE disk to test my eye calabrations. Iam very happy with the set so far, Blu looks great on it, also no problems with my xbox 360 either. One thing I will say which is typical, is the standard def channels leave a little bit to be desired. But for the money its seems to be a very good set. Ill try and post some settings here and over at AVS when I get my DVE disk. On a side not there is no VGA hookup on this set, not a huge deal to me but my 360 I had running via VGA on the Sharp. The oweners manual states to buy an HDMI adapter to hook up a pc. Last edited by br715mech; 05-22-2008 at 02:07 PM. |

Well heres what a quick run came up with, I have never tried to use a calabration disk of this nature before so I am still learning....
Contrast 62 Brightness 52 Color 53 Tint 0 Sharpness 2 Color Temp warm Dynamic contrast off DNR on Color enhancement off Active Control on without light sensor I think the contrast is a little high and thats what Iam still trying to fine tune. Hope this at least is a start for some as there is not alot of info out there yet for this set. Iam still enjoying mine, seems like a pretty solid set. "quick side note these were done with a ps3 via hdmi in a moderate lit room" Last edited by br715mech; 05-29-2008 at 11:34 PM. |

1. Turn off the DNR and Active Control. They can actually add noise to HD programming. 2. Sharpness on this set is a little weird. While on most sets you'd want it very low or off as it can add noise, I'd recommend setting it to 5. Pop in a BD and pause it and try it yourself- 0-3 are very soft while 4 and 5 bring in good detail without adding anything to the picture. 3. Change that "warm" setting- makes the reds too red in my opinion (though you have the contrast set lower than I do). Try doing a search over at AVS- there's actually a thread dedicated to setting up the TV and they have some great custom color temps that I am using myself. Enjoy the set! |

Ok tried these settings tonight....On these sets there is no custom color settings, only normal warm and cool.
Im set to normal now and turned up the sharpness to 4. Along with a few other tweaks. I see what aramis109 was saying about the sharpness. You can turn it up some without taking away from the picture. Also I searched the avs forums, there really are not any settings for this model # yet. I did try a few from the other phillips 42" thread though. I just decedid to start from scratch again and see what I came up with this time. I started with the color temp on normal and went from there. Contrast 65 Brightness 52 Color 52 Tint 0 Sharpness 4 Color Temp normal Dynamic contrast off DNR off Color enhancement off Active Control off |
