Default Whats the best AV receiver for a PS3???

Hey. I'm "the new guy"

I intend to stimulate the economy with this magical $600 check I have just received.

When I bought my TV, I made the guy throw in a floor model Samsung home theater system for free. Long story short: (1) it doesn't have enough HD inputs (2) it sounds like crap suddenly (3) it's going on ebay (buyer beware)

SOOOOO, the question is - what can I do to maximize the PS3's surround sound capabilities for $600? Dolby True HD? DTS HD? I assume that these are the best available codecs, and I prefer a 5.1 setup...but beyond that I'm clueless.

MY SET-UP
Samsung 50" DLP 1080p (model # HL-S5087W)
Samsung DVD recorder (model# DVD-R155)
Sony PlayStation3 (60gb)
Directv HD-DVR

basically I want to hook it all up to a receiver using HDMI. What gives me the best performance of blu-ray/PS3 for 600$ or less? (more like $550 + tax?)

Thanks in advance experts.

You are George Steinbrenner and you only want to spend $600 on a receiver!?!?!

I believe the only option at that price point with those features if the Onkyo 605, or possibly its replacement the 606.

My response on the other one....

I'd put the funds from the Ebay Sale into the mix, and up your budget a little. but I'd buy a receiver (pass-through is o.k. since you have a PS3) and just start with two fronts, or the fronts/center. If you weren't happy with a crappy HTIB, another one probably won't knock your socks off.

Both of those look impressive, but I don't have the room space or money for a 7.1 receiver + all the speakers. I should have been more articulate. I've only got $600 to blow on the whole deal: receiver, speakers, sub.

I am fighting urges to buy a Home theater in the box like a Samsung HT-AS720 ($500) just for the convenience and because I'm a Samsung *****. Someone please stop me.

I'd've put it in the receiver one --but it matters little.

Believe us, we're all on the boards so much that we'll see it whichever one you slap it in. Putting it into 3 just makes everyone jumpy.

As for what you need, depends on your preferences. With a PS3 you'll be only able to send the new codecs in PCM, so you only need a receiver that will process PCM audio. Or, you can buy a receiver that will decode the new HD codecs itself, should you ever want to upgrade or buy a standalone.

speak for yourself.... I rarely stumble upon this forum

Really though... my advice holds up... get a pass-through receiver since you have a PS3, then get a couple speakers, and add the rest later... you'll be much happier.

yeah... try to stick to one thread, one forum. Pick one.
The ALL show up on the homepage anyways.
Mods might delete the others.

I use a Yamaha HTR 6090 and it is perfect. Everything it lacks, the PS3 makes up for (TrueHD & DTS-HD MA). But if you want something cheaper, look around. Yamaha, Onkyo, Sony, etc.. will prolly have the price range you are looking for.
Mine was on a sale but I think Best Buy doesn't carry them anymore...

I'd still go with the Yamaha, you don't have to use a 7.1 Speaker Setup with it. Then try to get some good Speakers on a Budget. Fry's has some Polk Monitor Series 50's going for $99 each and get the Center Channel to match. As for the rears, you might want to wait untill your budget can afford it to get some good ones, but then go with a Set that has Di-pole & Bi-pole selections. These can be used as either a 5.1 or as a 7.1 setup all coming out of one Speaker.

So if I find a receiver that doesn't list Dolby True HD/DTS HD in the features, but it list PCM audio, will the PS3 use the new HD codecs on its own? And all I do is plug everything together with HDMI and it works right?

yep... won't list it on the receiver while playing the movie, but you hit "select" on the PS3 controller, and it will show "HD MA" for audio....

But couldn't I end up blowing the speakers with all that power? If I don't have 5 or 7 speakers all at once to handle the power, won't it eventually ? Because I listen to music with lots of bass, and I always crank the volume as high possible.

Thats another worry of mine....It makes me want a home theater in a box because I know the speakers can handle maximum volume, whereas if I go drop $100 a pop on quality JBL or Polk speakers, I'll have to be cautious about not blowing them until I hook up all 5 or 7 of them.

The receiver will adjust to however many speakers that you do have. It's the ohms that are important and not how many speakers/channels the receiver is capable of (eg. My sony is a 7.1 and I only use 5.1 of them). Make sure the speakers ohm rating will match up with the receiver and you'll be fine.

Do not go with a HTIB (Home theater in box). Do what you said you would and get the receiver and then buy some speakers to go with.

It's really not that difficult. Trust me.

You listen to music with a lot of bass, and turn it all the way up.... hmm... just don't do that.... there's a thought. You can usually tell if you're damaging your speakers.... I don't understand how "all the way up" is even enjoyable.

Id go for a model that was made like last year. This way, as long as it has HDMI input and PCM, you can run the new HD Audio Formats and at the same time, probably get a higher end receiver than buying a new receiver with the HD codecs..
