Question question about speaker wire/hdmi vs non hdmi audio

1) i have all my speaker wire wrapped together and tied with an elastic band behind my tv so it doesnt look like a jungle back there...does this affect the performance/sound i hear from my speakers?

2) also, on a side note, i have a very modest hdmi samsung upconvert dvd player with 3 ohm samsung speakers that attach to it for my bedroom, the dvd player has the option of HDMI AUDIO ON (which just projects from the 2 stereo speakers on my tv, so 2.0) or HDMI AUDIO OFF (which projects from the speakers and sub, so 5.1)

however, to me the hdmi audio on sounds much more crisp and detailed than the 5.1 hdmi off...is something wrong here?

also, when i have hdmi audio on every 10-15 secs it cuts out giving me silence for 2-3 seconds....can anyone help?

thanks

1) if they're shielded properly, you shouldn't notice any degredation...

2) your "modest" setup might be getting "outted" by the HDMI... the higher res. audio may be showing off the flaws in your speakers.... just a thought.

thanks for the reply, but i dont understand your response to my second problem...are you basically saying my speakers are "crap" (which they are) and thats why my hdmi audio sounds better?

if so, what are your thoughts on the cutting in and out?

What is driving the speakers?? Do you have a receiver, or is the player driving them somehow?

I ask because 3 ohm speakers require a lot of juice (more than conventional 8 ohm speakers), so it may be a limitation of your output device - not being able to properly power all 5.1 channels, but being able to properly drive the 2.

the dvd player has audio inputs in it, no receiver

I wasn't trying to be that crude..... but "yeah" ??? a little!! You said it was small/modest, so I think the clarity of audio can't be replicated by your speakers....

Same thing when I got new speakers... certain CDs that were live, downloaded music, were intolerable with new speakers, because I could hear all the flaws in the recording (even happens with studio albums I've purchased!!!) So I think the receiver is putting out levels/frequencies that your speakers can't replicate.... but I'm just conjectoring (and making up words perhaps )

I know someone who has one similar to that..... just not the towers, smaller speakers. I'd guess that either one (player, or speakers) are what is the cause behind the poor sound quality from the HDMI connection.... I would just listen to it via component, and just use it for what it is, your nice "modest" setup..... some surround sound in a bedroom is still better than t.v. speaker sound, so at least you have it, and you're getting use out of it. I don't think there is a "fix" or anything I would justify in replacing....

so how come the sound from hdmi from the dvd player to tv sounds better than the 5.1 speakers? ...is it just that they are low end and 2.0 "hdmi" audio sounds better?

There are a litany of issues you could be having, from bad connections to bad speakers. There is no way that any of us can properly dissect this issue without more information, more descriptive descriptions of the "better" or "worse" sound, or actually getting the chance to sit in your bedroom.

Sorry.

I hope you know you really aren't getting HD audio. Especially from a HTIB from Samsung. I can tell you a few things. You should upgrade your reciever if you want real HDMI audio. If your HTIB system is HDMI pass-through, which it probably is, you're only passing the video. If you're using that built-in DVD player for your entertainment, then you're definately not getting HD audio formats. Plus, those bundled speakers aren't that good of quality and I guess you mean those speakers are 8 Ohms, not 3 Ohms. Please clarify!

I didn't read that part. So you're saying the sound from your TV speakers sound better? WOW! Sorry to say this but, your speakers and reciever suck...hard! You need an upgrade!

I think he is suffering from what I was up until a few months ago.

Basically it sounds as though he bought a DVD player that came with a 5.1 surround system (for free?). The HDMI output was initially confusing to me as well, as like others I just jumped on the "Wow its HD" without really knowing. (I've always been a bit impulsive to my regret)

The DVD player had speaker outputs (low quality amp inside no doubt), that you just connect up, and includes a passive sub. He is probably correct in saying his speakers are 3 Ohm. The ones that came with mine were 3,4 and 6 respectively for front, centre, rear.

And to tell the truth the sound was pretty awful from it. I never tried it just through my TV (normal movies on the TV sounded better) but the centre was very very poor and the surrounds seemed pretty much as if they decided if they wanted to say anything on a whim. The DVD player had a setup that allowed you to change the levels of speakers which helped.

Strangely the passive sub sounded quite good.

Now, I have the 605 and the Kefs I realise exactly that what I'd been accepting previously was in fact pretty awful.
