I ask because 3 ohm speakers require a lot of juice (more than conventional 8 ohm speakers), so it may be a limitation of your output device - not being able to properly power all 5.1 channels, but being able to properly drive the 2.
the dvd player has audio inputs in it, no receiver

I know someone who has one similar to that..... just not the towers, smaller speakers. I'd guess that either one (player, or speakers) are what is the cause behind the poor sound quality from the HDMI connection.... I would just listen to it via component, and just use it for what it is, your nice "modest" setup..... some surround sound in a bedroom is still better than t.v. speaker sound, so at least you have it, and you're getting use out of it. I don't think there is a "fix" or anything I would justify in replacing....

so how come the sound from hdmi from the dvd player to tv sounds better than the 5.1 speakers? ...is it just that they are low end and 2.0 "hdmi" audio sounds better?

There are a litany of issues you could be having, from bad connections to bad speakers. There is no way that any of us can properly dissect this issue without more information, more descriptive descriptions of the "better" or "worse" sound, or actually getting the chance to sit in your bedroom.

Sorry.

I hope you know you really aren't getting HD audio. Especially from a HTIB from Samsung. I can tell you a few things. You should upgrade your reciever if you want real HDMI audio. If your HTIB system is HDMI pass-through, which it probably is, you're only passing the video. If you're using that built-in DVD player for your entertainment, then you're definately not getting HD audio formats. Plus, those bundled speakers aren't that good of quality and I guess you mean those speakers are 8 Ohms, not 3 Ohms. Please clarify!
