Default Blu-ray on Linux?

I'm reading a lot online (and even an old post on the forums) about playback of blu-ray movies being "illegal" using Open-Source (Linux) software. Is this true? It doesn't seem to make sense since Dell sells systems with Ubuntu and blu-ray stock, and IBM is also a player who has considerable interest in the open source community. Plus...why shut out business, small as though it may be? Does anyone know the answer?

If you can find something to decode and play it back - more power to ya.

Best hope might be to hope Mac does something with it and then try to port it to BSD.....

It's moreso a problem of the copy protection. If it's not copy protected, there will be no problem with playing a BD on Linux.

I'm sure a BD player will come soon enough if Sony is serious at all about Linux on the PS3. But, so far, they've been a bit weird about the Linux support.

Thanks for your response, guys. I think this has actually cleared something up for me. It seems that the problem is that there are no commercially developed programs out there that allow playback of Blu-Ray in Linux. And that's just the problem, even though companies develop distros, there aren't too many companies that develop software. Most of it's written by individuals or teams of volunteers. So we just need someone to step up and make playback software that can be approved. Luckily that couldn't be hard at all, since Open Source means the code of such a program could be easily analyzed to make sure there's no illegal copying.
