Default what cooling fan to get for an Onkyo 805?

I keep reading about people worried about their Onkyo 805 overheating and/or catching fire, so they put a fan on top of it. But what kind of fan? All the ones I found in a quick search that would be silent and compact enough to lay flat are USB powered. The 805 doesn't have any USB outputs, just a regular electric outlet for small devices.

Is there a USB hub made just for electrical functions and doesn't require a PC?

Ah, I see. I think I finally found some AC to USB adapters in the iPod accessory section. These should work fine, right?

Really any independently powered USB hub would work, and will probably be cheaper than buying one or two iPod accessories. Just go to amazon or buy.com and search for a usb hub and make sure it has its own power cable, i.e independently powered, not relying on a USB connection to a computer.

Do you have a link to the fan you found?

Thanks

they have their own fan that should kick on.... I think you're getting something "unnecessary" Or you could get a "tiny" desk fan, and connect it to the AC outlet in the receiver, so it powers on every time you turn on the unit.... and place it behind, out of site. Needs to be small/quiet though.

Yeah, it's probably unnecesary, but some days at work I have nothing better to do than to browse the internet for things I'd like to buy. So I got a USB-powered laptop cooler that was on sale at a Japanese store and an AC-USB adapter.

Looks like there's all kinds of PC fans and stuff modded for AC input for AV equipment use in the states, but there's nothing much like that I can find over here, and I probably wouldn't be able to do it myself.

Adding cooling in the form of an external fan is not going to hurt....remember with electronics, "heat kills"......the real challenge is finding a fan that is quiet enough so that it doesn't bother you during soft passages in the movie.

I didn't feel like starting a new thread so I decided to post here. Right now I have my relatively large center speaker over my reciever and am getting my 805 soon. Do you think I'll be able to put the center speaker over it without it overheating?

If you have any old 12v ac adapters and pc fans lying around you could always mod the fan and connect it to the ac adapter. I had several 120mm pc fans that weren't being used so I soldered them to the adapters, drilled out the back of my cabinet and installed them. Adapter is connected to my power conditioner so it kicks on/off with all the gear.

See, and I went the conventional way and bought a house with Air Conditioning.

Edit: Seriously, I stopped taking this seriously when I read "catching fire".

Whether you take it seriously or not, someone actually did report that it happened: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...2#post11751532

He might've been full of it, but I can spend an extra $20 for a little more peace of mind.

See, that's why you're not supposed to hook an xbox 360 to anything.

i have this one it works well. has many different fan speeds. i only have about 1.5in of clearence above my onkyo 605 so i needed a fan w/o the fan it was getting 120+ w/ the fan it stays 98-105 depending on how hard im pushing it.

i have 1" clearance on the top of my 805 (except for a small spot on the back right corner). two 3" fans blowing across the top keep it nice and cool. without the fans you could cook an egg on it.

yeah the setup is not recommened, but I wanted this receiver and it's worth it!

So having a center channel speaker over an 805 isn't such a great idea?

I ordered the one from coolerguys.com. I don't have my 805 yet (it's supposed to be here in two days), but I want to be prepared in case it gets as hot as some members keep saying.
