Default Best HDMI receiver that doesn't decode new codecs.

I'm thinking about joining the dark side and getting a ps3. Since the PS3 can handle the new audio codecs, are there any really good receivers that have hdmi capability, but don't decode. Looking at something that can push 100-115 watts per channel continuous and has good quality components throughout. Price $500-$1000. and i only really need 5.1 and 2 hdmi inputs.

Can't help you there, but I would still consider a receiver that can decode the codecs. You might not always have or use the PS3, plus many times the decoders are better in a receiver/processor than in a player. Just a thought.

me again...

I would look at the last years model from all the normal players. As long as they can handle PCM multichannel audio you'd be good to go.

Tops on my list..
Marantz SR7001...IIRC Someone here has one (Beta Man?), might be good to see what his thoughts on this unit are. Maybe even get the SR8001... It'll be a little tougher to track one down... I would suspect there are a few others...

For that kind of money, buy one that decodes.

Yeah, if i did it would probably be a Denon 2808. If ecost comes back in stock they're around 600-700 bucks. I've heard denon before and they were pretty nice.

yeah but if you can get better components for a lower price, then why not? Those who use a PS3 as their BD player (me included) are paying for features they are not using..Why not let that cash go towards better componentry...

I agree, with all the new receivers that are coming out now most of them do decode and price wise you aren't looking at much of a difference.

Honestly, my thinking is towards "how many at that price WON'T do the new codecs?" Especially the 1,000 mark...

Again, just me. You can get a damn fine receiver for that price that will handle PCM, AND do the decoding.

Yep... the Onkyo 875 (with good Burr Brown DAC's and Reon video chips) is at the upper end of that price range...

My thinking was Marantz 7002.. around $1000-1100... 7001, $600-800. There are a few differences but it's still a nice savings from a high quality vendor...

For that price range I would suggest checking out the Yamaha RX-V3800. It has a really great amp section, offering 140 watts X 7 full range, it upscales all video sources to 1080p, and it even includes the new codecs for future proofing. The suggested retail is $1,699.95, but if you do a price comparison online, like at mysimon.com, it's available for around $1,070.

It's a hell of a lot of receiver for that price, and with the HD codecs built in it's a bit future proofed.

Yeah... I have a 7001 and a 5001 Accessories4less.com sells refurbs too... and although I purchased my 7001 new (before going blu) I got the 5001 as a refurb. for $350 from these guys, and the remote/manual/everything was still in the plastic.... I tested it out.... I'd say it was new if they hadn't told me...... The prices on the 7001 from them, are $600 Refurb, or Brand New for $800 so either way it's in your budget.

I love the sound, but I'd also recommend NAD and Denon.

I don't think he'll be able to find one with 2 HDMIs for under $1,000 (or under $2,000 for that matter, but I could be wrong)

Ah, my bad. I wish more manufacturers would put their MSRPs on their web sites! (I'm keeping an eye on Rotel, 'cause I'm curious to see what their HDMI 1.3a pre/pros will be like...)

The new Sony Str-DG820 & 920 have 3-4 HDMI inputs at a prices of $400 - $500.
Why not "future Proof"? You never know what setup you may have later on.

entry level is 2k for processors although you can probably get a really good deal on one.
