I started going to cinemas when I was a wee baby and saw Star Wars in 78 or 79. The films from before that which I wish I could have seen, in the order that they come to mind, would be:
North by Northwest The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Ben Hur Vertigo Rear Window For a Few Dollars More The Wild Bunch The Godfather The Magnificent Seven High Plains Drifter Bear in mind, this isn't necessarily my ten favorite old movies, but more precisely, ten movies where I feel like I really missed out on the cinematic experience, so the list favors movies that had color and widescreen (which didn't come about until sometime in the late fifties). I mostly picked movies with stunning photography and sound (hence the preponderance of Hitchcock movies and westerns) There are a lot of great old movies with black-and-white, square aspect, and bad sound, and seeing them in the cinema wouldn't add anything to my home viewing experience. To the OP: Good choice of topic. Last edited by mjbethancourt; 05-22-2008 at 04:26 AM. |

![]() I missed my chance, due to either age or opportunity, to see Top Gun, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Terminator, Lethal Weapon and Lethal Weapon 2. From that short list, I wish I'd seen Raiders on the big screen. I've got no top 10 but among the movies that I wish I'd seen on the big screen are How The West Was Won, Se7en, North By Northwest, Blade Runner, Lawrence Of Arabia, Ratatouille, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, and Mute Witness. I saw Jaws on the big screen but I fell asleep in the middle of it; it was nap time! fuad |

This IS a good question. Actually inspired me to register. I need to specify that I would like to have seen these movies during their time with only the film experience of the movie-goers of that time.
10."The Wizard of Oz" 9. "The Searchers" 8. "Bonnie & Clyde" 7. "The Ten Commandments" 6. "The Day the Earth Stood Still" 5. "Enter the Dragon" 4. "Forbidden Planet" 3. "Godzilla" (1954) 2. Any Universal Monsters 1. Any Hitchcock The original "Planet of the Apes" would be on here but I have vague memories of my parents taking me to see it at a drive-in when I was like 4. I also saw "King Kong"(1933) and "Gone With the Wind" when they were reissued in the 70's so they are not on there. |

Great question OP! One thing I wanted to interject. Besides seeing these amazing films on the big screen, (which would be one Hell of a treat) there is also the factor of relativity.
By that I'm referring to viewing each of these movies in the year they were released. Star Wars is my personal shining example of this. I can't even begin to tell you how this changed "everything". Seeing Star Wars on opening night in 1977 was the unexpected event to end all events. Period. I of coarse went to all of the digitized remakes of 4 thru 6 and it was nice to see on the big screen again. No question about it. But it was during those viewings that I realized that I could never really go home again. Those initial, newly born genre movies for me will always remain in the viewings and years they were released. |

Monty Python and the Holy Grail Mystery Science Theater 3000 the Movie Big Trouble in Little China Dirty Harry The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Empire Strikes Back Young Frankenstein Terminator Enter the Dragon Raders of the Lost Ark (though I did get to see Last Crusade when I was 6 at the theater) Those were the first I could come up with. |
