Default Top 10 Universal films... are they worth losing sleep over?

Ok folks... Here is the top 10 grossing Universal films of all time from boxofficemojo.com

1. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) - Spielberg (Director/Producer)
2. Jurassic Park (1993) - Spielberg (Director/Producer)
3. Meet the Fockers (2004)
4. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
5. Jaws (1975) - Spielberg (Director/Producer)
6. Bruce Almighty (2003)
7. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) - Spielberg (Director/Producer)
8. King Kong (2005)
9. Back to the Future (1985) - Spielberg (Executive Producer)
10. The Mummy Returns (2001)

I don't know about any of you, but it sure looks like a lot of "pro-blu" Spielberg to me on that list. I can rent the others on DVD. I think some people at Universal will be losing their jobs for their anti-blu stand. Any thoughts?

and this is why in my boycott, i am sending them a package containing 4 of their top 10 highest grossing movies on DVDs that i wouldn't be watching anytime soon anyway. Bruce Almighty, King Kong, the Back to the Future Trilogy and the Grinch amongst others will be arriving at NBC/Universal studios in the mail accompanied by a letter explaining my reason for doing so. Their decision is inane and is only hurting us. This will cost me virtually nothing and my voice, however soft, will be heard. If more of you do it, the better! Here's where to send your letters/dvds:

NBC Universal
100 Universal City Plaza
Universal City, CA 91608

I've mentioned before that Universal has been shooting their load (16 out of the 20 that are their top 5 at the US box office for years 2003-2006) and would need to dig deeper to find more (and/or add some big ones with new movies), but I hadn't realized that they had already released every non-Spielberg title in their top 10 all time except for one just to get where they are, and that one Meet the Fockers will be released in 5 days. So, they'll then be down to only Spielberg titles in their top 10 all time and we know what Ken Graffeo said Spielberg's position was on them releasing his movies. Also, despite the box office I don't expect Meet the Fockers to sell all that well given the kind of title it is, that it is catalog, and how its big box office was largely due to the first one and it isn't rated very high on imdb.com (6.4/10).

Great point Darin!

11. Liar Liar (1997)
12. Jurassic Park III (2001) - Spielberg (Executive Producer)
13. The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
14. Apollo 13 (1995)
15. A Beautiful Mind (2001)
16. Meet the Parents (2000)
17. The Sting (1973)
18. The Mummy (1999)
19. Knocked Up (2007)
20. American Pie 2 (2001)

You know... other than the Spielberg stuff, which we know his opinion on Blu, I'm not really going to lose any sleep over Universal's decision to stick with HD-DUD. There's way too many awesome movies from the other studios that I will gladly spend my money on.

DrinkMore... you must not have read the post.

What is simply being said in this thread is that Universal really doesnt have much to offer.

Read the posts before posting.

I know that Sax.

If universal does not have much to offer - WHY KEEP MAKING THREADS ABOUT IT?

I think this is very relevant as far as where things are going and whether Universal will be able to support HD DVD to the same point they have so far, and enough to keep things even close. From what I see of the list, as of next week, out of their top 20 all time that aren't Spielberg titles, all they will have left is:

15. A Beautiful Mind (2001)
19. Knocked Up (2007)
20. American Pie 2 (2001)

The Bourne Supremacy should get in there, but 2 out of the top 20 plus Knocked Up isn't much if they can't release Spielberg titles. To be fair, if it is only Spielberg directed titles they can't release, then they have:

9. Back to the Future (1985) - Spielberg (Executive Producer)
12. Jurassic Park III (2001) - Spielberg (Executive Producer)

left out of those top 20 also. That is of course for films and they have TV stuff also.

With Jurassic Park 4 coming next year Universal could try to use it to win in Japan, but if the war is already over then there with Blu-ray winning they will either need to release it on Blu-ray there or forego most of the high definition on disc market in Japan for that title. I wouldn't want to be in that position if the Blu-ray market in Japan grows and I was trying to get an HD DVD win in the US.

I think we're both on the same page DrinkMore. We just have a different approach.

I started the thread more or less to let others understand that they don't need to let the Universal decision bother them. I thought by posting some facts about their most popular films the folks who are really upset might realize that its not much to be upset about.

Essentially... my purpose to post was to produce a positive. The more our fellow blu-ray family here understands about the facts related to Universal's films, they can tell their uneducated friends and family who might be leaning HD-DVD or just unsure that the Universal hold out on Blu-Ray really probably won't effect their favorite movies.

Hey Darin... You're right about the deep TV show catalog that they have, but aside from the recently produced programs, most older TV shows were only recorded in standard definition...plus I think Universal/NBC is too cheap to go into the vault and remaster their TV shows which were shot using film. I think that any of their TV content which is not already produced in HD probably won't ever get released in HD, just standard DVD treatment. Just a guess.

Interestingly of that top 20 list, I have only 3 in DVD (two cost me 4 bucks each last Xmas, that's why I got them), and 2 on LD (because they have full bitrate DTS ).

I guess I've been waiting for those great films to be released in a format that makes them justice as I didn't want to experience them diminished from the large screen experience.

I guess I can wait a little more.

I was just looking through my DVD collection, and I realized that most of my Universal movies are the ones with the crappiest quality . . . kind of off topic, but it made it a bit easier to wait it out. 40 Year Old Virgin and Meet The Parents stuck out to me, as the video quality on these is pretty bad, especially 40YOV for being such a new movie. But we digress . . .
