Question Image Drag Issues - Please help?

Hello guys

Let me start by saying I'm only but a young student and, as such, all I could afford is a Hitachi. It's 40", full HD and was very well reviewed.

In any case, the image often drags. Particularly in dark scenes, when motion is fast. Shaky cam films are a nightmare! Now I know this will be predominantly due to the budget-ish set (was around £350 as I recall), but I don't think my HDMI cable costed any more than a few quid, un branded. If I were to upgrade to this HDMI cable (http://amazon.co.uk/dp/B005XZTPW6) would it remedy the issue at all? If not, any suggestions?

Upgrading your HDMI cable won't make a difference, have you tried changing the settings?

Question

Okay. The reason I ask is because the cable I had before was even worse and I certainly noticed a difference in picture quality. What makes certain HDMI cables more expensive than others?

As for settings, I've tried changing bits n' bobs but frankly I have no idea what the majority of them mean so I'm clueless.

There won't have been a difference in P/Q due to a different HDMI cable,it sends a digital signal, digital is digital so as long as the signal gets there then what arrives will all be the same.

It is said that maybe over a long distance there may be a difference but not for what is the norm for the majority of us.
Better build quality is the only upgrade of a more expensive cable.

I don't know what the model number of your TV is or your Blu-ray player for that matter but my guess is that something is 'on' in your settings which is causing the issue.
The likes of digital noise filters and so on should be off,is your Blu-ray player set to 24fps and your TV can't handle it?

I'm wondering if it's the refresh rate might be like 60hz could be why it's so slow

Any of these settings mean anything? I've put what I I've them on

CINEMA CONVERSION MODE - Auto
OUTPUT VIDEO FORMAT - 1080p
BD/DVD-ROM 1080/24p OUTPUT - Off
YCbCr/RGB (HDMI) - Auto
HDMI Deep Colour Output - Auto

The other settings seem pretty straightforward. The DNR and whatnot is all off. I'm confuuuuuuused.

I've just found that the tv is indeed 60hz. Anything I can do about this? Is it bad?

60hz is a very low refresh rate. I had a Samsung LED about a year ago with the same refresh rate and it had constant image drag/blur.

On a 60hz set, its just something you will have to live with.

The settings will change nothing, it is to do with the panel itself.

I recommend you get a 400hz or more TV when you next buy one.

Hope this helps
Sam

Thank you for your help, fellow Sam!
I can close the book on this case and relax. I'll try and ignore it.

It will cause judder due to a 3:2 pulldown being used. How obvious this varies from nearly invisible to extremely noticeable depending on the set.

The higher hz has nothing to do with this. Nothing at all. Cinemas until recently only showed films at 48fps (showing each frame twice). The only reason they have moved to higher fps that I am aware of is to accommodate 3d. The problem isn't that 60hz/fps is to low, the problem is the pulldown (meaning some frames are shown more often then others, which invariably creates judder). Most plasmas for example run at either 72 or 96 hz in 2d and have better motion then lcd's (no matter how high the hz of the lcd).

Really? because the reason refresh rates are there I thought were to point out what tvs are good for sports watching etc. with fast moving scenes. Low refresh rates would cause image drag, no?

because my old LED had 60hz refresh rate and had awful blur/drag. Then I upgraded to a 400hz tv and had none at all.

Thats my experience.
